View Full Version : Vanishing Closed Captions

I've noticed that on most of the programming I record, there aren't any captions after the second ad break. It doesn't appear to happen to live TV (just checking in towards the end of the hour, haven't sat through anything to check yet) or recorded HDTV.
Anyone else have similar problems?

I noticed on Lost this week that there were no closed captions prior to the first commercial break. I think there are occasions that there is an error in captioning, and whole segments of a program are left uncaptioned. I don't believe it is routine, though, any longer. If you're having it just on recorded HD on your S3, I'd take a close look at your signal quality. We don't have CableCards yet, but OTA we've watched a few programs recorded in HD on our S3, and the aforementioned problem with Lost was the only issue we encountered.

The captions would disappear on recorded programs on Discovery, TLC, History, and a few others. All are digital simulcasts of analog channels. Going through the suggestions and picking a few from the digital channels at random, they all work fine. At least, they work when fast forwarding through them and stopping randomly.
Checking signal levels, the levels for the digital simulcasts of analog channels are very high (95 and up). The levels for HDTV are in the 90s, and the levels for the other channels seem to be in the 70s and 80s.
So maybe it's too much signal. Of course, the amp the cable company installed isn't adjustable and without it the signal strength is crap.
Still very odd that the captions work fine on live TV on any channel I've tried.
Edit: Spoke too soon, it just did it on live TV too. Second ad break (actually, might be the first), captions work fine through the ads (for the few ads with them), but no captions once the show comes back.

I noticed on Lost this week that there were no closed captions prior to the first commercial break..I noticed the same, and, being slightly hearing impaired, I rely heavily on captions.

Y'know, I've only recently heard about "too much signal". I think I may suffer from that, but I'm not sure. As I understand it though all you need to do to "fix" it is split your signal a few extra times.
