For those of you who are used to switching between tuners (as you watch TV), beware that DirecTV DVR is pushing to replace your TiVO and you will NOT be happy with it. It is missing the most basic interoperability -- manually and actively switching between Tuner 1 and Tuner 2. Avoid allowing upgrade away from TiVO at all costs, unless you don't mind having the ability to switch viewing between tuners stripped away.

Forgot to add that, according to DirecTV, they have no plans for correcting this appalling oversight. Apparently, DirecTV, in their zeal to get their DVR to market, forgot to ask their TiVO customers what they like about their service. DirecTV is going down hill fast.

I am not looking forward to moving away from a TiVo based unit...

Nevertheless, due to the fact that I almost never watch live TV and switch between tuners, this is not one of the features that will matter to me...

When I say "almost never", I think I watch maybe a dozen hours of live TV a year... And that's probably a very high estimate...

DirecTV is going down hill fast.

Going down hill fast? Because they don't offer a dual buffer DVR? Get real man... what percentage of the "average" user even knows what a dual buffer DVR is, much less what it does.

The average person (in my opinion) wants something that will record CSI and 24 so they can watch it when they want to. They are more intersted in the content of the offering (the channels available) than the interface of the DVR. Price would be another major factor.....

I am more concerned about the channels availiable and the price, than the dual buffer DVR.

I have been using a single buffer DVR for so long it is what I am used to so I adjust my viewing habbits accordingly. BTW I use a UTV and MCE for OTA HD......

There is a lot you can knock D* for but the lack of a Dual buffer? I would take Local MP4 over dual buffers any day (as I am sure a lot of people would). Again you have a choice you could get a series 3 for 799 and the tivo fee or you could get the HR20-700 it is all about choice.....
