I have 2 Series 2 140 hr...when I first got it I had to return 8 different times for new models due to modem/hard drive/audio/no power conditions. When all was said and done, I finally received one that worked. My problem is that someone/somewhere at Tivo, things got messed up. I have 2 other Series 2 140 hour recorders that they sent me by mistake. Since it was their error, they stated that I can keep them. I would like to know : is there any way that I can hook up one of my spares so that I can use it strictly for recording, similar to a VHS? I don't want to sign up for the Tivo service.

No. Only some Series 1s can be used without a subscription.

You probably can add one to your account for 6.95 a month. (Additional TiVos on the same account get a discount on subscriptions.)

If a Series Tivo had a open account at one time(i.e. someone was paying the fee) and if U disconnect the Tivo before U quit paying the fee, then the Tivo will work as a VCR without having the TV program guide and most other features. U can't use the record button, but U can schedule recording by time and date.
DO NOT connect the Tivo to a phone line, or TIVO will turn off the recording feature.
U can't change any set up items that require a connection to Tivo and U can't connect to Tivo to set the time. This means that U have to 'allow' for what the real time is and what the Tivos' actual time is.
I wouldn't advise using a Tivo like this, as U can get older series 1 Tivos for cheap that U can still connect to Tivo to change setting and time updates, but still don't have to pay the fee if U don't mind not having the TV program guide. Or better yet, just buy a Series 1 or Series 2 with lifetime, they are not that expensive. Or buy a ReplayTV with lifetime on ebay or craigslist. They are even cheaper, although Tivo is much better.
