Oh my god, this episode was cringe-inducing... I swear I watched almost the entire episode peeking through between my fingers.
Michael to Jan "We need to set some ground rules..."
or Dwight's "You don't have e-mail on your phone" followed by "Nobody's calling you"... damn, it was hard to watch. :)

Funny as hell though, good start of the season so far!

Heh, this was a nice episode. Wow, I feel bad for Michael, it's sad. I know what you're saying MickeS.

"Can you check the price on a Chinese baby?"
...
"I don't think I'll want a baby in 5 months"
Something like that, haha.

BTW, what exactly was Angela's interview segment about? She said something about a code phrase she had to point out sluts and then complained about flies being in the room.

Was any of that supposed to make sense in any way? Cause I didn't get it.

Sigh... some people just don't have the mental capacity to appreciate a show like The Office. Seriously - why bother?

No, it was not supposed to make sense!

I think Jim sincerely likes Michael. He is always sticking up for him. When Michael showed up to Jim's party and sang that duet in karaoke, Jim got up there and sang with him. He definitely feels sorry for him, but I think it's almost turned into a lost/hurt puppy thing for Jim. He's secretly rooting for him, just like in tonight's episode when he showed up at the party. It wasn't to laugh at him, it was to be nice.

Oh, and I spit out my water when Michael was in the room doing his camera moment, and then they panned over to the Hammermill guy. That literally almost killed me. :D

Yet another classic episode. I loved Michael's reaction to the camera when Jan said, "I can't be on top of you 24/7." He totally wanted to say "That's what she said" but somehow he summoned some restraint.

I really wish we would have seen more of the Angela/Dwight thing. They kind of left that hanging after Jim thought she was a hooker.

Toby trying to ask Pam out: "I was wondering, um, uh, um, [pause], I totally, um, forgot, um, what I was going to say."

Loved when Pam realized her date wasn't leading anywhere and she buttoned up her blouse one more button.

When Toby was trying to ask Pam out there was a brief moment when the Post-it's on her desk were in focus. I paused to read them. It's her TV schedule. She watches Big Brother on CBS and a show about Jane Goodall on Animal Planet. I'm surprised a CBS show would get mentioned on NBC. Also glad to have HD.

He was just being typical clueless Dwight and in the process inadvertantly making Michael look foolish. Why would he be passive/aggressive towards Michael who he clearly worships.

And yet, she wound up in Philadelphia.
In Dwight's hotel room.
Naked.
(And that makes Jim thinking that she's a hooker funnier)

In this way, Dwight and Angela are becoming the Frank Burns and Hotlips Houlihan of The Office.

I didn't even catch that.

I wonder if we saw the beginning of a relationship between Creed and Meredith... as the relationship progresses Creed is too fried to remember being involved with her, and Meredith is always too drunk to remember what she does. I think there's some "funny" potential there...

I had mixed emotions seeing all the Hammermill references. Hammermill used to be one of the two major employers in my small hometown of Erie, PA. Like most other industry in the Rust Belt, it moved out and left a lot of people with nowhere to work. Was a blast from the past to see the name... On national TV, no less.

Kevin had the line of the night. In reference to Pam being single, it was something to the effect of "I'd so hit that."

I took that to mean that she was talking about how trashy the other women were and here she is drawing flies. I took it as a "she thinks her s**t don't stink" kinda thing.

The whole Kelly/Ryan relationship cracks me up. He's always so annoyed with her, yet he's still with her in a seemingly "I'll stick with this until something better comes along" kind of way.

How awkward was that date with Kelly telling Pam's date about how Pam obsessively reads his comic strip daily as if she was some kind of stalker? :D

It made perfect sense . . . because Creed has serious loss of memory issues. Among many other issues.

The point is that Creed lives in a world of his own, probably created by many, many years of doing drugs in the 60s. That's why Meredith gave him that blank unbelieving look. Of course they have known each other for some time.

In the deleted scenes for "Booze Cruise", Creed was talking about how he was in a band in the 60's (the actor Creed Bratton actually played in a band called the Grassroots which had some minor hits).
He admitted that he did a lot of drugs in those days and can only concentrate in stretches of 90 seconds.

Ladies and Gentlemen, you have witnessed (and enjoyed) the new era of product placement on TV. There were name brands everywhere. Hammermill, Microsoft, Blackberry, various alcohols and even CBS television programs.

If they do it this way and the show is this good, I won't mind...

(the actor Creed Bratton actually played in a band called the Grassroots which had some minor hits).

allmusic.com says:

The Grass Roots had a series of major hits — most notably "Let's Live for Today," "Midnight Confessions," "Temptation Eyes," and "Two Divided by Love" — that help define the essence of the era's best AM radio.

I must say I was surprised as the characterization of Grassroots as having minor hits. Some of those songs still get air time today.

Creed's essentially playing himself, an old folk music legened - that happens to have taken a job in a regional paper supply company.

But, I'm not sure if the other Office employees realize Creed's past.

I think they hinted once that Oscar is aware of something (via a deleted scene, he essentially said "Creed is a pretty cool guy"). But I don't know if a deleted scene constitutes canon.

Not as funny as the first episode but that was classic, still very good.

I am not much for the romance angle in any show, but I am still amazed to how well developed the relationship between Jim and Pam is. In this episode they were never in proximity to each other and never even talked about each other yet their interest in each other was a tangible part of the show.

By the way Jenna Fischer was Jay Leno last night. She is apparently a big television watcher.

in "Booze Cruise" after Michael tries to pretend he knows how to play guitar w/ the band, Creed takes the guitar and totally starts jamming. Everyone is gobsmacked and that's when Creed says in a confessional that he used to play in the Grassroots. They even flash a picture of the band onscreen.

And I 3rd the opinion of that it wasn't all that funny. The last scene w/ the blacklight was the best.

I recall neither song off of the top of my head (but then maybe I also did too many drugs in the 60's) and I own some obscure stuff from the 60s and 70's.
(Heck, I own Rockpile's only album)

According to allmusic.com, the Grass Roots only had two top ten hits ("Let's Live for Today" and "Midnight Confessions") neither which hit Number 1.
"Temptation Eyes" (which Bratton did not perform on) only hit number 15 and was their third highest charting song.
I stand by the categorization as "minor hits".

I don't think that they had as much influence and play as say, the Hollies, the Turtles, Iron Butterfly, the Animals, Jan & Dean,or even Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.

I'm not saying that they were a bad band but commercially, they were not in the same league as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, etc.

Not for about 20 years.
I've probably heard those songs but I just don't remember them at first thought.
I don't think I've listen much to music radio for about 10 years now.

I think Scranton lost its passenger train service when Amtrak took over in 1971 -- although even before that, they didn't have direct service to Philadelphia, only to New York (actually Hoboken) in one direction and to Chicago in the other. (What's now NJ Transit's line that runs through Dover, New Jersey, is the old route to Scranton and beyond.)

allmusic.com says:

The Grass Roots had a series of major hits — most notably "Let's Live for Today," "Midnight Confessions," "Temptation Eyes," and "Two Divided by Love" — that help define the essence of the era's best AM radio.

I must say I was surprised as the characterization of Grassroots as having minor hits. Some of those songs still get air time today.I thought of The Grass Roots as one of the top bands of the late sixties/early seventies. Towards the end of their run they played an outdoor concert in my hometown. It was in my high school stadium and I was in maybe the 11th or 12th grade - around 1973 probably. It was a great show. I had a tye-die tshirt from the concert that I wore for years and years until it literally fell apart.

I read on one web site (http://www.angelfire.com/co/helper/grassroots.html) that in the entire rock and roll era; only 9 bands (including The Beatles) have had more hits on Billboard's Hot 100 than The Grass Roots. So I'd say they rank up there with the top bands.

I agree. I'm sure it was her and I said so earlier in the thread.

...But let's not get all Lost conspiracy theory-ish here. I'd say it's a safe bet it was her...

I was just commenting that I didn't think that JIM saw her face.

A hooker would call Dwight whatever Dwight told her his name was. He may have used D as an alias.

Ok, now that I've actually watched the episode there is no question that it was Angela and she said: "D?".

I can't imagine why there is any uncertainty.

Sheesh! We all have TiVo, right? Lol!

I, too, can't believe that there's even a debate about who it was...of course it was Angela...

Whenever I hear "Two Divided By Love" on XM, I cant help laughing knowing that Creed is making upbeat music, cheery love songs no less.

"I love inside jokes. I'd love to be a part of one... someday."

So did Michael actually get the paper deal with the Hammermill rep? If so, it's yet another thing I love about this show. We've seen it before, and now we see it again, Michael is actually a competent salesman.

It was uncertain precisely because this is the first time I remember Angela calling Dwight "D". Writers are usually pretty careful about details like that. It's like if a character flies a plane in the fourth act, sometime in the first act she mentions her dad teaching her how to fly.

Isn't this the first time we (would) have seen Dwight and Angela alone together outside of the office?

Jim's party. Not entirely alone, but they did make out in the back yard.

It was not uncertain.

Yeah we have never seen Angela and Dwight alone together in any real private setting, so we would have no idea what she would call him in private.

Are there really this many people confused about who was in the room? Honestly, do any of us really see the character Dwight cheating on Angela?
We saw Jane Doe check in. I think the circumstantial evidence is in on this one.

He'd probably be too afraid to cheat on her.

"So, can we tell people you're going to be there?"
"No, you can not."

"Why do they call him the bus?"
"Because he's afraid to fly."

"If you do that, you're gonna have to put out."
"Oh yeah, you're gonna have to put out."

LOVE this show!

the funniest part had to be when michael told pam she should wear her wedding dress on her date. I had to pause and laugh at that one TWICE :)

Are we sure that when we hear Jim's voice on a voiceover, and it cuts to a video of Jim speaking, that it was Jim speaking on the voiceover and not someone else?

I think Michael's great sales skill comes from his tactic of liquering-up his clients. The meeting with Tim Meadows for example.

If the entire voiceover before we see Jim in the shot was the word "Go", I'd be open to the possibility that it was a TD cueing the talent.

The close-captioning when Jim goes into the room actually said Angela: "D?", so even if there was the slightest bit of doubt (which there wasn't for me), that should settle it.

Now, Toby wanting to ask Pam out.... isn't Toby the HR rep? He should know better! :)

Back in "The Carpet", it was established that Michael was a top Sales rep under his predecessor, Ed Truck.
And I don't think it was so much liquoring up TIm Meadows as much as bonding with him over the fact that they are locals.
Jan was impressed by his handling of that meeting. Watch her reaction when Michael shifts to his pitch.

Can't believe nobody mentioned Michael's "fun pants." He had white jeans, neatly pressed from the dry cleaners, that he planned to wear at his party. He's still living in the 80s, and probably hasn't been to a real party since then.

Ladies and Gentlemen, you have witnessed (and enjoyed) the new era of product placement on TV. There were name brands everywhere. Hammermill, Microsoft, Blackberry, various alcohols and even CBS television programs.

If they do it this way and the show is this good, I won't mind...

All those products and no mention of Chili's??
I'm shocked!
