View Full Version : Wearing brown paper bag over my head

In some ways I feel ridiculous for having adopted the Series 3 right out of the gate. It's inevitable, I know, that 1.0 products have lots of bugs and unfinished features. The Series 3 is no exception.
Yet I did it.
Do you feel like a fellow bag-wearer? Yes or no?

No my Series 3 is working pretty well. The quality of the HD picture is better than it was before with the cable companys HD cable box. I've had very few issues and those I have had haven't really been big enough to make me regret the decision.
Of course I love testing new things so I'm used to watching them evolve and dealing with the issues with them early on.

My S3 works just dandy. It'll only improve should MRV and/or eSATA materialise.
It possibly speaks to your problem if your experience is improved by a paper bag, of course. :)

Nope, I am quite happy with my S3 as well.
It is nice to be able to record MNF and replay it back in little over 1 hour. The time savings (along with HD video) are well worth the early adopter costs. IMO
I have spent countless hours trying to get XP MCE working with OTA and QAM along with the cost of hardware adds up to $800 easily.

My S3 looks pretty. I have nothing bad to say about it because TWC keeps blowing my appointments and not showing up for the installs :P
This Sat is my 3 week anniversary of owning the S3 and my 3rd attempt at getting an installer to show up... wish me luck :D

My S3 works great. There are no significant bugs at all -- all the core functions I've asked of it work perfectly. Everything my S1 can do, my S3 can do better. That's the standard by which I'm measuring, so I'm quite happy.

So far, not at all. I may come cable card installation but as of now I'm delighted.

He said three week anniversary. One week from this Saturday was the 23rd, two weeks was the 16th, and three weeks is the 9th.

Just a few small problems -- program guide has a couple bad HD channel listings, occasional audio drops when scrolling in the TiVo guide, TCO problems (listed in another thread), but, if I were to grade it so far, I'd give it a 90 out of 100. The pleasant surprises include better than expected tuner sensitivity, better than expected PQ (both SD and HD), speedy menus, and the remote.

I'm very happy with it, though I'm expecting Tivo to release one with a larger hard drive sometime in the near future. I can easily remedy that by adding a larger drive myself.

I tried a paper bag over my head, but I found that it interfered with my viewing of the television. It also hindered my breathing, so now I just watch TV through a vegetable strainer.

I needed to put the bag over the TiVo so that the remote would work! Once I opened it up and did the Glad Press and Seal Fix I am happy with it.
Do any of you have plasma TVs?
Oh yah and one of my Cable Card Eject buttons was broken right out of the box.
And you should be able to search for programs that are in HD.
No brown bag ... but a lot of the plasma owners are using plastic. :)

I am very happy with my S3. I now have one of each series, and they keep getting better with each iteration. The HD looks great, and once the cable card installation was completed ( 6 total hours including Mediacom support time) no issues at all.
I would give the new box 95/100, with the slow channel up/down when using the guide being my only "complaint" at this point. The best feature is the ability to switch between the tuners so easily. The DVR that the cable company gave us before we bought the S3 had some sort of quantum physics equation that had to be entered in the remote before you could actually switch tuners (read: never was able to actually switch tuners, but could watch one while recording another, so some of the same functionality)
I highly recommend the S3 HD TIVO!

I don't need the bag either. It works fine, the 1.0 flakyness is confined to a few rough edges and the odd glaring missing feature (such as HD wishlists).
I do have a Plasma TV, and its never interfered with any IR equipment I have.

Whoops! My bad :)
I got confused. I purchased my S3 on Tues, then bought another one on the 16th and cancelled the first one... mangled the dates in my head.
Guess I shoulda said:
"My 2 week anniversary of the S3 that I kept and the almost 3 week anniversary of the Tivo I ordered but they forgot to ship"! :P

Would straining pasta help pass the time?

I'm a Che@p Chicken B@$t@rd. I don't need a bag. The S3 is coming (some day.) Its getting tried out and its going back. I have no expectations, and don't expect any.

I am quite happy with my S3 also. I have had it since the 14th and am quite happy. Anyone who has ever been an early adopter should expect a couple rought edges. That is all I see, rough edges.
I am confident in TiVo's ability to fix up the rough edges and add more features and functionality in the next few software updates.
Go TiVo!

I'm happy to have tivo back in my life. The S3 is a great machine.
I do pull out the bag though when people ask me how much I paid for it.
While it's worth it to me, nobody "gets it".

When I compare the price of the S3 to the other components in my rack, my speaker system and my Hitachi -- then the percentage of use it gets, it is WELL worth it to me.
The only brown bag I use is the one I barf into when someone tries to compare the S3 to a cable DVR (but, then, I'm prone to hairballs).

I have a Series 3 without CableCard (install tomorrow!) and it works just fine -- improved picture quality is a plus. I'm looking forward to being able to access History International, Military Channel, all the additional stuff I want, without having to have a cable box.
If, of course, the CableCards work properly.

No complaints here. I never used TTG or KidZone, so I'm not really missing those. I didn't have dual tuner before, so I'm loving that. This is my first foray into HD, so I'm working out some issues with my reception OTA and getting used to my new Sony KDS50A2000 (not really the forum for it, but an AMAZING TV!). I don't really like having to confirm deletes, but that's minor. I don't regret jumping in at the start one bit.

Keep fighting the good fight! You should be getting credits and a free install for your troubles. Speak nicely to the CSRep, but demand that you be compensated for your time and aggravation. Small consolation, but something is better than nothing.

I'm not quite wearing the bag yet but I feel that it's sitting next to me ready to be put on.
First I had the cable card issue that took them 3 techs, dozens of phone calls, and a week and a half to get working but finally it works.
Now I am up against the Copyright Holder Policy deleting my HD Programs that I purchased the S3 for.
Other than those 2 things everything has been fine with the S3 but if my shows get deleted it will make it useless.
So like I said I'm not wearing it yet but if my shows keep getting deleted I'll end up puting it on, selling my S3, and going to a Comcast SA8300HD or the new DirecTV HR20 both of which are not TiVo :( but they won't delete my HD shows.

Absolutely no brown bagging for me either. I love my S3 even though I can't get the HD premium channels. :( However, that is my cable provider and not the S3s issue. It is so nice to be able to record broadcast HD programs instead of the SD ones. I totally love it!

I'm having some issues with one of my tuners, but even with that I'm still happy with the box for now. I trust the issues will be worked out, either with a box swap or determining it is something else.
