I have a DT Series 2 Tivo and I just upgraded it with a 250 GB WD hard drive. We followed the upgrade instructions for the specific TiVo at Weaknees. After installing and reimaging, the first time it started up, we got a green screen. The TiVo was able to figure out the swap space error by itself. However, now we get random crashes or freezes during programs. Sometimes, the menus disappear when you navigate the TiVo screens. Any idea of why this might be happening?

I just upgraded my new DT with a Seagate 300GB drive. I used the image from PTVUpgrade and the interactive guide through Weaknees. I made a backup image on a FAT32 drive, and then did a total backup from the original to the new drive. I had no problems.
I'd guess that somewhere in your process you may have made a typing error? The best idea would be to redo the upgrade process. You'd lose any recordings on the 250GB drive.

What swap space error?

TiVo needs a certain amount of swap space to function correctly, designated by the "127 option" we used during the imaging of the drive. If you don't have enough swap space, you get the "green screen of death." TiVo was able to figure out the correct amount, surprisingly, and continue. However, we get random crashes and freezes.

Would be helpful to see the exact series of commands you used for the backup and restore as well as drive configuration.

mfsbackup -f 9999 -so - /dev/hdb | mfsrestore -s 127 -r 4 -xzpi - /dev/hda
hdb = Old 80 gb drive
hda = New 250 gb drive
I am replacing the old with the new.

And I used MFS 2.0 with large kernel support.
Here is a new behavior...when going through the TiVo menus, such as going to "Now Playing.." and then navigating more menus, text slowly starts to disappears until it is just a blank screen (only the green background remains). Typically then, it will crash and restart itself.
I didn't do a "Clear and Delete Everything" when I put the new drive but thats because the instructions only said you needed to do that if you were moving the drive from one TiVo to another.

I know about swap space, my question was "what swap space error?" - getting the GSOD doesn't mean it was a swap space error. And if it was a swap space error, Tivo doesn't "figure out the correct amount." And 127mb of swap is what people recommend for a 250GB drive. It's only when you start using drives larger than 250GB that some people recommend a larger swap space.
I'd do a diagnostic on the hard drive.

How and look for what?

If you bought the hard drive new in a retail package it likely included a cd with "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic" on it. If not you can download it from here.

We haven't had a crash for several days so it may have worked itself out. If it does it again, I'll try to diagnose the drive.
Is there any way to view the crash logs for the TiVo OS via term?
