I currently have 2 DirecTv/Tivo's connected. I have a third unit, a HNS GXCEB0T with a bad hard drive. My HR10 has plenty of space, but my DSR 7000 only has 35 hours worth of recording space. I am contemplating one of two moves, either getting a replacement hard drive for my HNS GXCEB0T or adding a 2nd hard drive for my DSR 7000. The cost is mute since a new hard drive configured for both is the same.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I tend to shy away from a second harddrive as the item that fails the most is the harddrive. Why have two week points. Also with two drives you will run hotter. Why not just get a single larger disk for the DSR7000?

I agree with rminsk .... two-drive Tivos are also a pain to troubleshoot if problems develop later on. It's often very hard to know which drive is causing problems in a two-drive Tivo.

Double the chance of failure, more heat inside the case, more noise with two drives, more load on a power supply only designed for one drive, mega cheap large capacity IDE drives. Everything points to the fact that a 2 drive Tivo is a bad idea.

So far my T60 with two drives has performed flawlessly for almost 4 years now. Back then it wasn't considered a problem to have two drives. If the T60 should have a HD failure then I'll replace it with a humongous HD. :)
