So yesterday, my R10 dies, the HD is gone. I get a new HD and use InstantCake to build the drive, put it in the R10 and it works, first time. I'm impressed that a schmuck like me can do that. My hats off to InsantCake.

So I've gone thru all the setup and the final step was to call up DTV and activate. I just now called them and they are doing system maintenance and can't activate anyone (they say) for 24-48 hours! I ask does that mean they can't even activate brand new customers and he says yes.

There's no give here, so no activation. It seems I do have part of my service. It looks like I've got everything (haven't checked it all) but my local channels, which ticks me off most of all since I can't watch any pro football tomorrow. If all my programming is there but locals, why can't they be there too.

Could I have picked a worse weekend to lose my HD?

Try calling 1800DirecTV and enter in extension 721 and your locals may be fixed. Alot depends on just what kind of "maintenance" they are doing.

Had the same problem. Installed new HD in DSR6000. Called at 5:30 CST. Well after dinner tonight, I called again at 9:30. CSR told me system was running slow, but he was able to activate my DSR 6000. Try calling them again.

Your locals were there. But just not 'mapped' to your local channel numbers. You would have found them somewhere (in NY, they are around the 380 area). It also would have fixed itself overnight if you waited.

He had a tone of voice that just reeked of "go away, don't bother me."

You'll probably get your locals back by going into Setup and running the Auto-detect satellites. That worked for me a month ago when I upgraded my HD.

I suspect they really don't want the customers to know they can reset/refresh their own access cards just by making a simple phone call.
