Is there any way of telling on the D* website what the length of a commitment might be? I really don't feel like dealing with a CSR, but I am considering moving on to the new TiVO and dropping D* for Comcast. I have no idea what time I might have left on a commitment that was no doubt made when I got my HR-10. Also, does anyone know of any back-door ways OUT of a commitment?

Considering that the penalty (as I recall) is $150 AND it is prorated, I doubt you'll owe them much if you back out of your agreement. I signed up with D* about 3 years ago and the commitment then was 1 year. Now it seems to be two. When that change took place, I have no idea.

The hd commitment is two years and as of march it had changed to a $300 prorated fee. So it depends when you originally did the hd upgrade and no there is no back door way out of a commitment. DTV holds steadfast to their commitments. Of course there are the few minor exceptions like a customer activated and disconnect within the first week. They're more likely to get their commitment waived depending on why they're cancelling.
