Never Mind. Apprently, this question is asked alot and the answer is no. Someone should put this in a basic FAQ so people like me can find the answer quickly.
No need to waste the Guru's time.
NO YOU CANNOT USE R10 with Cable!!!

To say it another way.
All DirecTV DVRs, whether TiVo or not, cannot be used with cable.
And to make you feel better, the FAQs apparently aren't read very often. :)

not to mention the search feature on all vBulletin websites leave much to be desired.

Yes, I searched for an hour but didn't find the answer. Its not like I have all day to scan every forum for an answer!
So I tried and failed, but in the end I got the answer I didn't want.
As an aside, buying the flat screen LCD HD TV was a mistake. The company I bought it from had a 7 day return policy and by the time I found out that buying HD now was a great error, it was too late to return.
Warning to TV owners: HDTV is not ready for prime time! Unless you want to pay big bucks for 10 or eleven channels of programming that you may not even like!

What I am going to put in my new house (move in date is November)
Downstairs for general viewing rear projection Hitachi 57F59 (57 inch, about $1,200)
Upstairs theater room MOST LIKELY a Sony VPL-VW50 projector (about $5k) with a 92" screen on one wall
Both of these include built-in "up convert" circuits to take any input signal and get "as close as possible" to the maximum resolution of the unit itself
So, even non-HD channels will display at "near" HD resolutions
It may (must?) be that the model you bought did not include any type of "up convert" or "line doubling" (vendor terms vary) capability, so your SD signal was not "processed" to make it look "nearly" as good as HD
But... you might want to do some user guide reading, and searching through the options in the on screen menu... since it may be there is a way to TELL your unit that it needs to activate the "up convert" processor

Between the OTA local HD channels, and the HD offered by DirecTV, I have plenty of HD content. I'm actually pretty "HD content". :D

John, You may be right - I hope you are. I did not get much support from the vendor I bought the Sony 40" LCD HDTV ((KDL-40S2000) and even though I would say I am very tech savy, I have not been at all happy with the quality of the picture on my $2200 TV. In fact, we have side-by-side compared the image of the HDTV with our 6 year old Sony WEGA CRT TV (32") and the old TV looks much better. This is since the LCD seems to amplify all the bad signal quality feed whereas the CRT masks the weak signal and noise. I am not sure, but I think the TIVO unit even compresses the signal more making it that much crappier to watch.
It just seems wrong that all else being equal, the LCD is slightly lower quality to watch in SD than the old CRT TV. I could have bought 4-6 CRT TVs for the price of the LCD.
I hope you are right and that I can find a way to tweak settings or upconvert the signal, because right now, I am very unhappy with the TV and kicking myself for the purchase. I am not an impulse shopper, but this is one case where I did not do enough homework and when I read Consumer Reports I thought I was an educated consumer. Boy was I wrong - and my wife is happy to remind me!
Does anyone know a good forum where I could get some help on trying to set this LCD up right? I apologize for taking up space here with this problem. Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Ken

The answer I have found (a 32 inch Sony SD analog; a 36 inch Toshiba analog SD; a Sony Bravia XBR 40 LCD; and a Samsung DLP 50) is to watch HD on the HD sets and SD on the SD sets.
Yes SD looks better on an analog SD set, much much better.
Yes HD looks amazing on an HD set!!! What happened to me was that my viewing habits changed. I now only watch HD. My wife who is into Oprah and Dr Phil watches all her TV on the upstairs SD TV.
Heck, right now I have both DirctV and Cox Cable HD piped into the house. Cable on one SD and the Sony and DTV on the Samsung and the Toshiba.
