as a gift, not that it matters, is it still considered a lease from D*? I saw one, brand new, sitting there on the shelf, yesterday. I almost fell over. The seal was still there and it was sealed. If it's worth it, I'll pick it up and give it as a gift to my BIL for X-mas. He's finally seen the light and has seen what he's missing by not having a DVR. I wouldn't want him to come to this realization and end up with a R-15 after all. Wouldn't do that to anyone.

If he's never had a DVR before, would he know the difference? I'd bet a R15 would seem like heaven to someone who's never owned a DVR before.

Based on a lot of reading here, the "first thing" DirecTv is going to do is try to add it as a leased unit... but if you/BIL are "very firm" that this is an OWNED piece of equipment, you/BIL will be able to have the equipment added and not leased

Yes, but the ONLY department that can change it to owned status is the access card department - they will need to x-fer you to that department AFTER the regular CSR gets it activated.
Just tell them the unit is an old closeout unit from Wal Mart & that you did NOT sign ANY papers agreeing to lease it.

This is very true.
I must say, I traveled for work for 4 months. Got home in June. For those 4 months I was in a hotel with the same cheesy cable channels they all have.
I had no idea i was so addicted to the DVR functions. Since that time I've paid attention. I've completely stopped watching any tv as it airs. I record all my shows and watch them later so i can avoid commercials. Not only that, my favorite is to record NASCAR races because you can FF through commercials AND cautions (just make sure to add 3 hours to the end of the recording. they never end on time).
AFter seeing how bad I hated it after getting home ( i nearly bought a tivo just to use in the hotel ), I'm convinced I'll need DVR service for the rest of my life.

I agree R15 wouldn't be bad, if you never had a TiVo.
It is not having DVR that is terrible. For me, TV without DVR is completely useless.

Looks like the proclimation today that he's looking at a HD Flat screen blows my R10 gift out of the water. I may have to change to the HR10-250 while I can still get one at Costco.

Do you have the Costco SKU # for the HR10-250?

Costco item number 910250 $269.99. No rebates or anything available at the moment. I understand that they can be gotten for as little as $100 with a $100 rebate from D* at the moment so that may be the better way to go. Costco did have a pile of them but let's see, it doesn't take a lot of thought to decide between $270 or free.
