View Full Version : S3 Yahoo and movie reels not working

I just got off the phone with Tivo who tells me that it should work, but it doesn't. Their last suggestion was that perhaps my isp (comcast) is blocking access to yahoo. Right.
If I select any of the three yahoo apps, I get "Can't Run. An error occured while running the application. Could not open URL." I get the same error on the little movie reel icon things. Live365 radio works fine, I can stream photos/music from my desktop, the Nikon photo stuff works, all the games work, just not yahoo or the little movie reel things. I am never prompted for user/pass information for Yahoo, it errors within seconds.
I have now done a network capture to see what the box is sending out to the internet: it makes no connection to yahoo at all, all outbound connections are to 204.176.49.116 on port 7288. This ip reverses to sjweb02.tivo.com, but that name doesn't forward to any ip address.
I believe the Tivo is phoning home to see if I have this feature enabled on my unit and for whatever reason, Tivo must be saying to go away. I have a series 2 and a series 3 unit, perhaps that is the cause of the confusion.
Any help? Bueller?

The problem I have with the Yahoo apps is that it does not remember my log in information.

My problem is that any application freezes up after about 2 minutes of use. I'm trying to enter in my Yahoo! ID and it doesn't give me enough time

I get the exact same error, and the apps behave the same. On my Series 2, the Yahoo stuff works just fine and its going over the same network.
I just chalked it up to a bug they haven't sorted out yet.
I encourage everyone with the problem to notify Tivo. Call their tech support and tell them what is not working: 1-877-367-8486.
The woman on the phone with me seemed to indicate it was the first she'd heard of the problem; so, people should let Tivo know what is wrong.

Galleon works fine, live365 works, podcaster works, the games work, and Nikon: Legends work all work.
However, the video clips, Yahoo services, and Movie tickets do not work.
It shows "Can't Run" "An error occurred while running the application. Could not open url."
This all works fine on my series 2 box.

Same problem - just set up 2 Series 3 boxes and 1 Series 2 box. Works fine on the Series 2 but "Can't Run" on the both Series 3's.

Bug Tivo about the problem. The more people who call, the sooner they'll realize it isn't just some user who doesn't know how to setup their home network.
Bug, bug, bug...
Same issue here. Will escalate to TiVo.

Add me to the list of people with issues. I can't get any of those items to run except for my own music and pictures. The rest result in nothing occurring other than the unit being locked up for several minutes before it kicks back to live TV or an error message.

I have the same problem with it. (I haven't yet contacted TiVo about it. I suppose I should do so soon.)Agreed...I haven't contacted them either since I don't use Yahoo services much at all. I suppose I was cutting them some slack in the CS department after the shipping fiasco. But, I guess this would actually be tech support, wouldn't it?
I, too, get the same error message on both my S3's ("Can't Run. An error occured while running the application. Could not open URL."). TiVo tech support said that a port is blocked. However, when I mentioned that I access my office via a VPN, he all but hung up on me, saying "You're on your own". Since I don't block any ports in my router, I'm sure that's not the problem. We'll have to wait unit Yahoo realizes that they're not getting the traffic that they're paying TiVo for - then it will get fixed.

I have my S3 conected via ethernet to a router and into my cable modem, just tried Y! Photos and Traffic this morning. No issues for me and I even found some photos I forgot I had! :)
Edit: Except for the fact I need to log in every time. Podcasts work OK too, just tested that.

The blocked port idea would be a great troubleshooting idea except that many of us who can't get it to work on the S3 have it working just fine on S2 boxes in the same network! *sigh*

Yes same problem here too... Yahoo & movies & fandango don't work.
I thought it might be a problem with PORTS on my router.. but I bypassed the router for testing. It connected to tivo withotu a problem.. but still no connection to the Apps.
Tivo said it was YAHOO's problem

Well today I got into the Yahoo Traffic and Yahoo weather apps for the first time. I do not have an account so I clicked to view without an account. I get to the next screen, and at best can use the remote to put input two numbers before it locks up. I can also see the menu below with numbers and letters but I can not get down to that area, and about the time the 2nd digit I type goes in, the app locks up and nothing occurs. Lucky though if I hit Live TV it bails out of there.
Probably not related but I got that far after installing and playing around with Galleon for a bit.

I checked it all out again at about 1am Sunday morning and all the apps seemed to work. So I have gone from none of them working to all of them working (OK I did not check out the games)
In Live365 sometimes still when I am scrolling up or down through selections the TiVo will freeze for a moment or two and not respond to remote responses. If it freezes up for more than a minute I hit Live TV and then go back in there again. It also happened within other apps too relating to menu navigation. When scrolling up and down through menu choices I can't imagine it is a huge burden on the TiVo so I wonder why it freezes up. If I had just made a selection and it delayed to download stuff then it would make more sense.
The only overall change on my part was a little bit stronger wireless signal via a wireless access point set up as a repeater which I installed which bumped my download speeds from around 600kbps to about 1.5mbps.
So maybe on poor or slow connections it creates issues with these Apps?

I purchased 2 HD Tivos and just set them both up. One of them is able to see the Fandango movies and the Yahoo Weather etc, and the other is not. I even plugged the working one into the ethernet cable that was hooked into the one that isn't working and it still worked so i believe that it is a bug. Also they are both running the save 8.0.1 version of software. Both boxes are able to reach the internet and play live365.

Once again, are people calling Tivo to complain about the issue with their S3? I think they have a database issue on their side. My network sniff had a character string that said "scienta", which I'm assuming means Scientific Atlanta. Maybe Tivo.com thinks my box isn't a real Tivo box.

I called Tivo and they had no clue. Said it must be a server issue. I pointed out that my S2 connects with no issue.

I got a new menu item today where the Yahoo and movie reels are, it says "CBS Sportsline Fantasy companion by AT&T". I get the same "Can't run..." error for that too.
I don't even get the logon screen for this stuff as some people are reporting they are able to do. I only WISH I had the issue of it not remembering my account information.
I may hook up my S2 unit and see if this stuff still works. Tivo support seems to be clueless about the issue and assume it's a networking problem on my end.
Time to sniff more network packets...

Probably because the URL includes information telling Yahoo what version of the DVR you are running. The S3 isn't sending the right information. It makes sense to me though I wonder what the hold up is in fixing it at Yahoo and CBS Sportsline.
I'm glad they are acknowledging that the issue isn't on the consumer side at last :D

The fact that my two S2 boxes work fine and my S3 doesn't and all of them are connected to my Linksys wireless broadband router rules out it being a firewall issue.
Did they have a suggestion for what port is being blocked or are they just giving you a technical dodge to get you off the phone?

The S3 is obviously doing somethign different then the S2's
what is really weird I think is that it works for some people on their s3's and not for others.
I think the main problem is somwhere in the way their ISP is handling the requests from the S3 and how they are being requested by the S3. Obviously something different is going on between the S2 and S3.
Is there a way that someone here can try to find out what the S2 is doing differntly then the S3?
That might be a big help for everyone

Idea grenade: perhaps the S3 units make a vpn-esque connection to Tivo, then it gets information for where to go next. What if your home network is the same ip-range as what Tivo is using for its internal nat?
For people whose S3 is actually working with Yahoo/CBS/Movie Reels, what ip/subnet are you using for your internal network?

More sniffing and I found a problem. When choosing the menu, I am getting one of my URLs listed as not found, or a 404. Here's a sniff dump, I masked my service number, which is sent to Tivo. No connection is ever made to yahoo, though it's possible that Tivo proxies your connection to Yahoo. The reason the Tivo guys are suggesting a firewall issue is that the Tivo box goes out on port 7288, not always allowed by some proxy/nat/firewall devices. I haven't checked what port the S2 uses. At any rate, I don't block outbound ports and I know Comcast doesn't either since I get icons for the bottom two links in my browser.
Here's the error:
GET /football_091106_v2/1158275672/1158276055-1189812055/icon.png HTTP/1.0

TiVo_TCD_ID: ****************
TiVo_SW_VER: 8.0.1a-01-2
HTTP/1.0 404 icon.png
Server: HttpServer
Not sure how long this works, but here's some icons that I can hit from my network, so I know it's not a firewall issue on my side...Tivo hits these for icons to show on the menu screen:
http://204.176.49.116:7288/yphotos_20060921_01/1159382572/1159385921-1190921921/icon.png

More sniffing (sorry about that)
It seems that for video reels/fandango stuff, one example URL it goes to is:
https://204.176.49.65:7287/fandivo_20060921_01/1159381892/1159382899-1190918899/
This requires a personal identity certificate on your S3 unit, you can't get there without one. The link above should be for "The Ant Bully", but without a certificate, you won't authenticate.
I suspect that some S3 units either didn't get a personal identity cert installed, or they don't have the corresponding root cert installed. Without access to the OS, only Tivo can know for sure if that's it.

Did they have a suggestion for what port is being blocked or are they just giving you a technical dodge to get you off the phone?
They gave me the list of ports that's listed on their website; I both tried doing what my router said for port forwarding, and I usd my router's DMZ option, which essentially puts the Tivo outside the firewall and fully exposed. Neither worked.
I don't think it was a dodge to get off the phone, though. I was jerked around a _lot_ last week trying to reach them, and the guy I finally reached agreed. He has actually called me back at scheduled times to follow up. Today he called for my router manufacturer and, when I told him about having connected directly to the modem without results, the modem manufacturer. So I certainly don't think I'm being blown off, but they don't seem to know what the problem is.
As to the person who asked "Who the heck cares", well, the truth is that I don't terribly care about these particular apps; however, at some point they may well offer something I do care about, and I'd rather just get it all working now.

The football URL is no longer throwing a 404, and I now see the icon; however, I still have the same problem. When you pay $799 for an uber-Tivo, I expect all features to work that they promote. It's bad enough that Tivo-To-Go and multi-room viewing is not currently supported, the least they can do is get this stuff running for everybody.

*sigh* Troubleshooting skills are on life support these days. They are wasting time chasing the typical straw man of blocked ports and mysterious communication issues when its obvious it is something going on either with the box or their servers since it works on S2 boxes in the same network.
I don't particularly care about the apps either its mostly just a curiositiy about how they broke them, though the CBS Sportsline stuff is pretty cool.

I'm aware of the issue with not being able to do Tivo-To-Go and MRV. Since they aren't currently allowed to support those two features, the least they could do is get the features that they ARE allowed to support work out of the box.
I see a few more people now reporting that the other apps are working now. It would be interesting to know what the problem was and what had to be downloaded to my Tivo to get it working again.

Check page 2 of this thread to get ips that your Tivo box is using to get the icons.
If you aren't seeing the apps listed, you likely do have a firewall issue. Look at my posts on page 2 and you'll see the ports the Tivo uses. If you aren't allowing these ports, you will not even see the Yahoo apps listed. This is a dynamic page for the Tivo...if it can't get there, you don't see the apps.

I tried those IP addresses in "Manually add a server" with no luck. I even tried opening everything up and running a port scanner that shows only ports 135-139 and 445 being blocked by my ISP, COMCAST.

My Yahoo apps started working today (same software, no update received). Give it a try, maybe it's working others too. Good luck!

Yahoo apps were not working when I first got the S3. Then they were working. Now they are not working again. I click and wait and it goes nowhere. Even my Galleon Server is acting up too. The galleon items are listed on the TiVo, but when selected they do not function. LIve 365 works though. Not then end of the world, but interesting why they work for some, not for others, or why they work, then stop working.

Any "official" word from Tivo on this? They use these features as "advantages" over cable company DVRs in their marketing? Has anyone actually called them?
