I just got the new box last night, and had the opportunity to set-up a few auto record wishlists. I checked the To Do list today, and the machine is picking up the SD broadcasts of the "wished" programs even though there is an HD version available on the HD version of the same channel. Is there any way to get the machine to default to HD broadcasts whenever available? Or do I just have to turn off the SD version of those channels in my channel list?

An example would be that I put in an auto record wishlist to record all Chicago Bears football games. I checked the to do list, and it shows the game recording from Channel 12 instead of its HD counterpart Channel 190.

Remove the SD channels from the received channel list so only the HD version remains. That should do it.

I would do the same, assuming the channel show all of the same content. Other channels (like Discovery) show different content, so you wouldn't have this problem.

I was afraid that would be the answer. I was just hoping to keep the SD channels active so I can record stuff that isn't broadcast in HD on those channels, enabling me to use the zoom aspect ratio. SD shows which are broadcast on the HD channels have the black bars on the sides to force them into 16:9. From everything I have read, you want to avoid the black bars / letterboxing on high $ HDTVs.

From everything I have read, you want to avoid the black bars / letterboxing on high $ HDTVs.It depends. Newer sets are far less susceptible to burn-in from letterboxing or pillarboxing. And different types of sets have different sensitivities - DLP is pretty much immune, while plasma is more sensitive, etc.
