I want to upgrade my original 40GB Tivo drive for my RCA DVR40 Series 2 drive with OS 6.2-01-2-321. I added a 120GB 2nd drive (bought from PTV Upgrades) over a year ago for added storage. The reason for my upgrade is simply to be able to use the PTVNet upgrade to turn on the USB ports, networking, etc.
I bought a new 120GB drive that I'm going to use as the replacement for drive A. I've been reading through the Hinsdale How-to over and over, and think I have the right method down. I would prefer to keep my recordings (and don't mind taking the longer route) so I'm going to use Upgrade Configuration #4 to replace my current Drive A with the new drive while still using my Drive B.
My first question would be if by doing this, will I be able to expand the Drive A to use all 120GB or will it be limited to the 40GB?
My second question concerns the warning about booting into WinXP. The only machine I can use to do this is WinXP. I do not believe there is any reason for me to have to boot into XP to do this straight copy of old Drive A to new Drive A and then the marrying of the two drives. So I would think the only concern would be that I would accidentally let the machine boot into XP with the original drives attached. Can I just remove the C: Windows drive altogether if I don't plan on doing a backup?
Essentially my copying of Drive A is the backup, so although I know it'd be nice to have a backup image somewhere, I don't really need it since I'm preserving the original Disk A anyway. Or maybe I'm missing a key reason I would need it? Like the fact that I'll be using the Drive B in the new configuration and now the old Drive A can't just be popped back in. If this is the case, would my only option be to get a small drive to put the fat32 partition on for the backup? Does it even need to have Windows or DOS On it? I don't want to mess with that C: drive any.
If anybody has any advice on this before I dive into my upgrading fun.. I'd really appreciate it!
