I won't watch doctor shows. I have no interest in them. I tried watching House for a while but finally gave up on it. I've never seen ER or the new favorite Grey's Anatomy.
I also won't watch lawyer shows or crime scene investigation dramas. None of the Survivor clones either.

Besides "24," I likely won't watch any of the "serial dramas" that copy 24's style. I mean, I don't mind a little serialization, like DS9 did, where each episode builds on what happened in the last; I just don't like series that all tell one continuous story and don't really have seperate episodes per-se.
Heck, even 24 I cooled on this season, and might not watch next season.

I don't watch cop shows as a general rule (although I've been known to make the occasional exception).
Basically any show that starts with the premise of "an elite team of law enforcement agents who solve tough crimes" and I lose interest. Which seems to be the majority of CBS shows, which is why I don't watch much CBS.

yes. But that was only the FIRST epsiode, IIRC, as that is how they made the video Christmas card that started the whole thing. Since then, they haven't done it that way. The guys (matt and trey) mentioned how funny it is that they use really fancy computers and software to make such "crude" animations.

No soap operas (but I do like hour-long primetime dramas)
No sports. (OK, occasionally NFL football)
No westerns (yet I LOVE me some Deadwood)
I'll dabble in almost anything else -- maybe just a teeny bit, but I'll at least try it. If my list above proves anything, it's that it sometimes pays to just try some stuff out. I missed out on 2 seasons of Deadwood (thanks Netflix!) just because I generally don't like westerns.

I'm with Sketcher. Anything "... with the Stars!" or "Celebrity" anything is out.
"X" or "Extreme" anything (except Extreme Makeover - Home Edition. Pretty awkward title now that I think about it.)
No cop/crime shows - not sure why. Think the last one I watched on a regular basis was The Rockford Files.
Dang, I'm old.
No medical shows for me, along with no modern comedies where sexual innuendo and bathroom humor get passed off as 'comedy'. Call me old school but I want comedies with well written scripts.
I don't watch football either. It's utterly boring to me and I can always find something else that's much more interesting.

I guess I'm learning to be more Never Say Never.
I don't care for Westerns and yet I think Deadwood is one of the best shows of all time. I also initially didn't like the western aspect of Firefly, wrong there too, amazing show.
Sports Night. Don't really have the sports gene, had no interest in watching a show about sports, turns out it was the opening salvo for Aaron Sorkins incredible writing.
Reality shows, I have several friends that hate this genre and yet once they gave The Amazing Race a chance they were hooked, now I rub their noses in it. :)
I will admit I get overwhelmed with Cop, Lawyer and Doctor. I try and chose the best of the bunch and enjoy it by pacing myself with a lots of Tivos during re-run months and the summer.

No Talent shows (didn't we suffer through enough of those in school?)
While I will watch law shows (I use to love Judging Amy before it got cancled) and some cop-like shows (I saw cop like because the only one I've watched is CSI and nothing like NYPD Blud or anything) I can't STAND any of the Law & Order shows. That includes the original and any of its spin-offs.
I also don't like dating shows at all. (And very mad that a show like Love Connection is shown on GSN when I don't think it should be catagorized as a game show at all!)

Traditional sitcoms. I used to watch a lot of them growing up, but at some point I realized how much time I was wasting on these shows without getting anything of value out of it. I stopped watching them on principle, and never felt the need to go back. Of course by now all my other TV genres fill up my days just as thoroughly :o

I don't think anyone here is being dogmatic about absolutely never watching a particular genre. Generally, shows of a given theme are similar enough that if you don't like that theme, probably you won't necessarily be drawn to the newest version of it. It isn't "close minded", it's personal preference.

I don't like mob or organized crime shows. The Sopranos? Fuhgedaboutit! I watched it once and disliked every thing about it. Same with any other mob show or movie. Talk shows (Leno, Conan) or commentary shows (Limbaugh, Beck, etc., whether conservative or liberal) I dislike too. I watch House, but usually don't get into medical shows.

1) Medical - I watch House but that is it for this genre.
2) Cop Shows - I currently watch Monk, Burn Notice (is this a cop show?) Dexter and Fringe (also counts as Sci-Fi IMO) and The Wire was my favorite show of all time.
3) Sci-Fi - Fringe and V. Used to watch Star Trek TNG when I was a kid.
4) Sitcom - Big Bang Theory, Better off Ted, Modern Family, How I Met your Mother, The Office, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Scrubs
5) Western - Although I'm watching nothing currently I loved Deadwood.
6) Mobster - Used to watch The Sopranos
7) Reality - Survivor and Amazing Race and that is it. I hate American Idol and shows like it.
8) Animated - Family Guy, South Park are great but I could never get into The Simpsons
9) Drama - Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Big Love, United States of Tara, Nurse Jackie, Californication, etc.
10) Documentary - Mythbusters? Does that count?
11) Talk Show - The Daily Show, Tonight Show, Real Time with Bill Maher
12) Variety - SNL
13) Sports - Football, Baseball and Golf but not that much.
Can't think of any others...

Police procedural shows (CSI, etc) irritate me to no end. Maybe its because they always solve the crime in one hour and the killer is always the special guest star.

I don't watch:
Crime Dramas (I think the last one of those I watched regularly was Hill Street Blues)
Reality shows, except for "non-celebrity talent shows" like American Idol (and even then, the only one of those I watch every episode of is America's Got Talent)
"Cringe" comedies (the kind you expect to star Ricky Gervais, where the show seems to be about someone who is absolutely terrible at what he does and how this affects those around him)
"Dramedies" (e.g. Ugly Betty)
Most shows where it is painfully obvious from the first episode that the intent is to get some couple together
In fact, pretty much all non-animated sitcoms except for 30 Rock
I seem to be in the minority on this one, but my top two genres are game shows ("proper" game shows like Password, as opposed to competition shows like The Amazing Race) and animation. "Sports entertainment" used to be high on my list as well, until WWE decided to target tweenage boys by "de-attituding" the product so their mothers wouldn't object (case in point: recently, they stopped a match in progress because one wrestler had a cut to his forehead and they didn't want parents freaking out over the blood).

Aside from a few on HGTV, or DIY, I will not watch any reality programming.
No group trying to survive in some bug infested remote locale. Nope. No racing around the earth looking for clues where to head next. No again.
No amateur and pro combination trying to trip the light fantastic. Lord, gimme a break. And no remake of Ted Mack's Amateur Hour, a songfest packaged with quasi-celebrity judges. Dear God, nooo!
And Puh-LEESE: Take the Big Brother/Real World/Road Rules/et al producers out, put them in a locked cage to fight to the very end. Then refuse to unlock the cage.
Other than that, I'm okay with it.

I won't watch doctor shows. I have no interest in them. I tried watching House for a while but finally gave up on it. I've never seen ER or the new favorite Grey's Anatomy.
I also won't watch lawyer shows or crime scene investigation dramas. None of the Survivor clones either.
This. My Tivo is pretty empty this season. :(

The Deep End. I definitely plan to watch...
...but you'd never catch me watching Idol or any of those talent-competition shows.
Loath them.
Also not much for most reality shows with the exception of survivor and TAR.
I also don't watch animated stuff. I have no reason, just never have.

I enjoyed the first two or three seasons of The Amazing Race, when it was more about the travel/tasks/skills and less about the overblown personalities and product placement.

I like reality shows that involve competition and elimination, but not ones that are more voyeuristic...like, oh, Real Housewives or Super Mean Nanny or The Hills, or whatever.
I have stopped adding on most doctor, lawyer, police shows. I will give pretty much anything on HBO or Showtime a chance, though.

Religious stuff except if it is news about religion such as the Pope's visit or things like Religion and Ethics News Weekly. Preaching is out. (They never have any religion except Christianity and I would like to learn about other religions)
No soap operas though some shows are like soap operas such as Harper's Island.

I'll amend my old post to say that The Wire is another exception (in addition to The Shield) to my I-don't-like-cop-shows rule.
Other types of shows I avoid:
The hoochie housewives shows
The biggest loser type of shows
My wife watches this stuff and I just have to leave the room when it's on. The housewives are too dumb to tolerate, and life is just too short to spend it watching fat people getting weighed.

I watch some reality TV but not much and I watch an occasional game so I cannot say I don't watch those genres. I rarely if ever watch BET so I guess Hip Hop is out.

For me it's "non-fiction" ghost stuff, like Paranormal State or Ghost Hunters, or Crossing Over with John Edwards (is that even still on). Which is weird, because I'm usually down for anything that would qualify to have a Time-Life "Mysteries of the Unknown" book, but ghosts and psychics don't do it for me.

And yet somehow I still watch too much TV, on average.

I never thought about this before. There seem to be tv shows for all the different flavors of Christianity but I don't recall noticing any shows for any other religions.

Actually there are TV shows for only a few flavors of Christianity, Catholic and Evangelical. The United Methodist Church, Lutherans etc. don't exist.

I don't watch (un)reality shows.
I haven't watched sitcoms since the 70's.
I don't watch sports.
I'm not thrilled with lawyer, doctor, or CSI-type shows either, but there's an extremely slim chance of me trying one.

Daytime Soaps. Other than that I pretty much watch all genres to one degree or another.
Cop shows used to be a huge staple of my viewing a few years ago, but most of them have become too predictable for me now. I don't watch any of the Law & Order franchise anymore for instance. Used to watch almost all of them. I still have an SP for "Criminal Minds" and one or two others but that's about it.
I don't believe I currently have very many SP's for medical shows left either. I think I may still have a folder full of "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice" episodes on TiVo 2 but they have been languishing there for months.
The Networks keep coming up with what look to be great ideas for new shows, only to screw them up beyond all recognition after the Pilot airs... Heroes comes to mind... Boy that looked like it was going to be great when it started didn't it? :p

Soap operas in general.
Teen dramas. Family dramas.
Reality shows which are some sort of contest, or the focus on the program is the animosity/relationship of the participants. This is opposed to reality programs where the focus is on the situation and has a certain educational element. The Colony is an example of what I would watch, as well as the Channel 4 ones that show up on Public TV occasionally.
Anything on TLC.
Westerns, or generally where the time period is pre WWII, or I can otherwise not relate to.
Tabloid/newsmagazine shows.
As a practice I generally do not watch police/law/medical dramas or family sitcoms, but I won't rule them out.
I will watch some "hard" sci-fi, but haven't got into much of it the past decade, except for ST:Enterprise.

I can't subscribe to the idea of a list of genres I would never
ever watch. However, I can list my least favorite generes that
I would never watch so long as there are other shows to watch. :)
Reality TV (I don't include American Idol in Reality TV)
Religion
Infomercials
Shopping
Non-English programming (except Soccer)
Mobster
sieglinde
01-27-2010, 05:48 PM
Non-English? I would watch the Asian stuff with subtitles but my cable doesn't carry that channel. If there are subtitles I am OK with non-English. A friend lived in an area with a lot of Armenians. I would watch an Armenian music show.

I've always hated mobster stuff, but that's not a prevalent genre anyway, so that's good. Also I have always hated medical shows. Operations, diseases, yuck!
Other than that, I've off and on liked all other genres. I'm a big fan of sci-fi. I like cop/lawyer/PI shows. I like military shows (shows like The Unit, not documentary stuff.) I like some sitcoms, but they have to be really outstanding for me to spend time on them.
I also really like some "obsolete" genres, like Westerns and variety shows. I miss them, but I can't really see networks trying out shows like that again.

The thread is supposed to be about genres you won't watch, period. I've just been amused at so many people saying stuff like "I will under no circumstances watch reality shows. Well, except for ***, which I don't count." They're kind of not answering the question honestly.

Well, I guess that when I opined that aside from HGTV shows like Curb Appeal, or Designed to Sell, or PBS' This Old House, and similar shows, I do not watch reality programming, I was refusing to lump these shows in with the dreck that constitues cheap programming today.
So lets limit my concept of reality programming as producer controled/influenced "competition" shows, whether singing, dancing, "surviving," or racing. Let's also lump in any show that encourages outrageous behavior, so as to appeal to the lowest common denominator in the worst of us: e.g., Springer, or Big Brother, or crap of that ilk.
Let's face it, the home improvement shows are more like documentaries when you compare them to the drivel that passes for reality competition shows. Hell, they're more like classic literature in comparison.
I recognize that home improvement shows are not scripted in the traditional sense, and neither are the various quasi-"competition" shows, but the competiton aspect, as well as the influence of the producer to control or promote the antics of some of the most borish participants, make each type of show very distinct genres.
So, since I have redefined "reality shows" then I am happy to insist that I avoid that stuff completely. I hope that now makes me consistent.

I can't watch nature shows, not even the heralded Planet Earth, because I don't like watching animals being killed and eaten by othe animals. I also don't like hunting and fishing shows...just don't like to watch any living thing die.
