View Full Version : Forced 6.3 Upgrade = Earlier For 6.3a ?

I hacked my Tivo a few nights ago, put the drive back in and logged in to the Tivo to manually run the upgrade to 6.3. I now have a "stock" unhacked HD Tivo.

I assume that my nightly call udates my records with DirecTV, basically telling them that I now am running 6.3.

So, if they now know that I am running 6.3, I'm thinking it means I will be early on the list for the next 6.3 rollout (6.3a). What do you think ?

On a side note, 6.3 is running perfectly for me. No audio dropouts or other bugs that I have noticed. I did notice an immediate improvement in speed, but it appeared to still be doing something in the backround for the first day or so. I wonder if the reported dropouts occurred before this backround process completed. After a day or so the thing really got fast, particularly the guide.

by that way of thinking....i purchased my hr10-250 in may 2004....one of the first people to get it...paid a thousand bucks.......then i guess i should have been one of the first to get the 6.3 upgrade.....yet i didnt...and havent

I think what he's saying is that if his HR10 reports back to D*/TiVo that he has the "buggy" 6.3 running, will they be quicker to get the fixed 6.3a to him than they would someone on the "stable" 3.5f version.

I'm thinking that everyone would get the 6.3a slices all at once, just like 6.3. When the daily call reports the 6.3 version it will probably activate the 6.3a upgrade. Or you could manually install he did in the first place..

Typically not. The last time they had a buggy rollout when they started it again it was random based on the service number. The last time there was a list you could put yourself on at tivo.com to prioritize your receiver. Once you added yourself to the list the machine was activated for the new release within 24 hours.

I had heard of that in the past rminsk, which is why I wish they'd actually do this for 6.3. Until they get 6.3a ready, they are going to have multiple versions in the field. Since I feel confident I could work around the identified bugs in 6.3, I wish I could sign up to get it via TiVo and just deal w/ 6.3a when it gets here. Other than dusting off that old webpage functionality, I don't see how this hurts D*/TiVo or creates more work for them.

If I were DTV, I would target those with 72.5 dishes who already got 6.3, first. Damage control. A no-brainer. Next, up rev all remaining 6.3s. Then, drop back to whatever strategy they were originally using for 6.3, at the point they were so rudely interrupted by apparently forgetting to beta test 72.5. Doesn't that seem logical?

Logical, yes. Remember we're dealing w/ D*/TiVo here and logic doesn't always apply, but I believe you're correct.

Well 6.3a is already out starting today. Haven't heard much about who has 6.3a compared to who already had 6.3, who is in a 72.5 locals area, etc.
