View Full Version : What's the button on the S3 remote for "-" in digital channel numbers?

I was fooling around with my Logitech Harmony remote on the new S3 box, and I stumbled on a button (on the Harmony remote) that let me enter '-' in the channel number. I have been unable to find a button that does the same thing on the actual S3 remote. I was hoping I could setup an activity for TiVo 1 and TiVo 2 and have the Harmony remote learn the IR codes for the different PVR switch settings, but I can't do that until I figure out where '-' is on the official S3 remote.

I think it's the skip button (->).

Ah, yes. That makes sense, I can't believe I never put two and two together with that (-) painted on :)

Thanks.

Speaking of which.... I would be estatic if Tivo would give the option to disable / ignore the NTSC side of things and let '12' be 12-1.

I supposed if you have cable + off air having to add the dash makes sense, but in off-air only opration it's just annoying to have the analog channel come up.

I suppose that's my fault for channel surfing a Tivo ;).

Does this work if you have the 30sec skip backdoor turned on? I suppose I could test it when I get home. I just WANT TO KNOW NOW! ;)

Yes, it does. It only acts as a dash key when you're typing in channel numbers.

'12' still tunes the analog channel. I already took all the analog stuff out of 'channels I receive'.

A similar thing happens with the S2. I have cable and an ATSC tuner on on of my S2s. Channel 12 cable is the digital cable channel. Channel 12 satellite is the ATSC tuner. I take channel 12 cable out of the channels I recieve, and channel 12 brings up the satellite (actually ATSC) channel 12. Enter '12' while already tuned to channel 12 and you get the cable channel.

Also, on the S2... if you say you don't get channel 150 in 'channels I receive', but actually enter 150 by remote, it will tune to the channel you don't receive rather than the closest channel you 'do' receive.

The auto-tune for season passes etc always seems to nail it right, so Tivo is doing something right ;).

My TV's built-in tuner does the exact same thing as the S3, which is part of why why I never use the TV's tuner. It's probably just going to be a fact of life with digital TV.

I don't watch much live TV, so it isn't a HUGE factor, just annoying to me.

Entering channels would be easier and you could still manually tune channels you don't receive. (*One of my channel families starts at 21-2. There's no 21-1.)

TiVo's engineers are way ahead of you. If you hit "12-" (i.e., '1' '2' '->') then enter, it will take you to the first of the digital channels that you receive (whether that be 12-1 or 12-4 or whatever).

Now, aren't you glad you bought a TiVo?

Now, aren't you glad you bought a TiVo? :) Hey! That's pretty neat. BTW, there's no need to press enter. Pressing '1' '2' '->' and waiting works the same way. My suggestion involves fewer key presses, but TiVo's implementation is lot less confusing. Kudos to the programmers who are paying attention to details!
