My HDVR2 seems to be dying, so do I buy another HDVR2, or get the new R15? I'm a fan of the tivo interface, so i'm skeptical of the directv software. what do you guys think?

The HDVR2 hard drive is most likely dying. If you have some basic computer hardware skills you can fix it yourself. I dont have any technical advice but if DirecTV is still running the zero cost R-15 with free installation promotion why not go for it ? Just send it back if you dont like it.
I too was used to the DirecTivos, I have 2 and had them for many years, but I since added 2 R-15's all at zero cost thru promotions and have been happy.
You may or may not have problems with the R-15. I have one that rarely has any problems and records very reliably. The 2nd one, things happen now and then but it still records all my shows. If I had another like the first one, I would probably replace both my DirecTivos.
One reason not to go for it would be the two year commitment. I got one just to play with because I knew my DTiVos would last at least that long, but I wouldn't have agreed to two more years if I didn't have a DTiVo as my primary.

I wouldn't be happy with a DVR that 'rarely has problems'. Both of my DTivo's have recorded every single show I've selected without a single problem...
The R15 is still very buggy compared to the Tivo operating system on the Series2 DTivo units.

Why don't you describe you issues with the HDVR2. Maybe somebody will recognize them and be able to tell you how to fix it. As long as it isn't a tuner or motherboard issue, everything else is repairable.

You can still find D-Tivo's around, but you'll have to do some looking.
Have you checked your local Wal-Mart - some people are reporting they are STILL finding them in Wal-Marts for $100.
You might want to check Weaknees, as well as e-bay, but be prepared to pay more than your probably did for your existing one. But, if you REALLY are happy with your Tivo, this might be your last chance to having one again... ;) ;)

Check Compusa stores too. I picked up an R10 a couple weeks ago for $69 (without any lease). They had 6 on the shelf.

I forgot about that. One of my friends got stuck with the extra commitment even though he sent the R-15 back.
I was on Ebay yesterday and there were new R-10's around.

How do you get it without a lease? I just bought one and they claimed if it was bought for $98 dollars, no matter what the manufacturer it's a lease. Interested to here how this is done.

A friend of mine bought to R15's @ Bestbuy today and he's not even a DTV customer. So I guess the "lease" or obligation isn't really an issue when purchasing them. Now I'm not sure what happens when you activate them, if they'll say there is now an obligation. Since my Sat60 doesn't write mating info to the card I wonder if it could be put into an R15.

The only way D* can enforce it being a "lease", is at the point of purchase.
The Wal-Marts I have been in do NOT state their units being leased, nor do they have you sign anything stating this.
As long as the place you bought this from does NOT hold you to this, D* really can't force you into a lease.
I would simply tell D* I bought it on closeout & did NOT sign any paper to the contrary, then insist on being transfered to the access card dept, who will then change it to owned status.
