View Full Version : 480i over HDMI?

I've got a problem on my 720p Samsung DLP viewing SD channels when I set the TiVo to native mode. The HD channels come in fine, but when I switch to an SD channel, my Samsung just says "not supported mode." Huh? When I switch the TiVo to 720p fixed, or 720p hybrid, everything works fine.
I'm using the HDMI cable. My last HD DVR (SA 8300) was hooked up through Component; didn't get any such errors on SD channels. My wish is to pass everything through in native mode and let my TV do the scaling ... but not if I can't view SD! So what's the deal, am I doing something wrong? Or is it possible my TV doesn't support 480i over HDMI?

Some TV's just don't support 480i via HDMI, yours is likely one of those models.

Most likely it's your TV. My plasma supports all video modes (although I'm running in 720p hybrid mode because the set prefers 720p,) and I don't have a problem passing 480i over the HDMI cable (though again, I prefer to let Tivo deinterlace to 420p before sending over the signal. You might have to do the same.)

Sounds like your display does not support 480I over HDMI that is quite common. My Panasonic Plasma does not support it either.
I think the Series 3 almost got it right on the resolutions.
What I think you need is a setting for
HD = <Native> and
SD = <Selected Resolution>
You only other option is the get a scaler, providing your screen accepts native rate.

+1 to that. My Westinghouse LVM-42W2 doesn't support 480i either.

BTW, I had a motorola 6412 for a day. Horrible machine.
Anyway, it had a setting for the 480i resolution and one for HD, but no native.
You would think this is rocket science :p

It's not, it's really not, and yet nobody has ever come close to tivo's interface and featureset. Good for tivo I guess, but I don't understand it either.

That's too bad. Guess I'll have to use 720p hybrid. Thanks for the info, everyone.

Is there a place to submit requests to TiVo for these types of enhancements?

Thanks, I suggested separate output selection for SD.

I wouldn't put much stock in that page. It allows you to vote for other common suggestions, and shows how often it's looked at by listing items that have already been implemented for quite a while now.

Yes, thanks megazone! Can't hurt!
I guess I could try to hook up the component cables as well. It will be a minor annoyance to switch TV inputs for SD, but I think I can tell the difference between TiVo's scaler and the one on my Samsung. I like the one on my TV better for 1080i.
