View Full Version : "This program was not recorded because there was not enough space"

My wife just informed me that the Tivo didn't tape tonight's episode of Project Runway. The message in the Recording history is "This program was not recorded because there was not enough space". Now that's odd because a) there is enough space, b) there's plenty of shows it could delete if there wasn't, and c) this episode looks like it's really a rerun (as one from earlier in the day with the same title shows the standard "this already appears in...." message). I do have quite a lot of "keep until I delete" shows on there... but I coincidentally just cleaned out two of those this afternoon. So by 7:00pm it should have been at least 2.5 hours better. Regardless, there was and is enough space... other things are recording.
Any idea what is going on?
Now, I wouldn't post about this one-off issue if I hadn't already noticed some other odd behavior I'd like help explaining. When adding some one-off recordings recently, Tivo would flatout tell me it wasn't even going to try and record it because I wouldn't have enough space 2 weeks from now. It wouldn't even add it to the ToDo list. How it knows what I'm going to watch and clean out between now and then I don't know.... but hey, I'm sure there's some logic in there somewhere. Anyone?
I'm on a stock R10 (70hr) and I just completely power cycled it to see if that would help. Any other suggestion?
Thanks in advance!

The most likely culprit is Season Passes with Keep Until I Delete (KUID). When you have a Season Pass with KUID it calculate space based on the programs recorded and upcoming recordings. It is best to use KUID very sparingly.

The two problems that you mentioned are really a result of the same thing. According to the way Tivo "thinks" you don't have enough room. You, no doubt, have some shows in the "to do" list that are marked as save until I delete also. And tivo knows that it has to have room for these shows, so it is in essence "reserving" space for them. That is why it didn't record Project Runway, and that is why it would not let you set up the other recordings. It knew that between the shows that you already have on the box with a save until I delete (or maybe save for a week or so) that it would not be able to let the new show in.
Think in terms of being me bouncer/doorman at one of those fancy Hollywood nightclubs, where you only let the "beautiful people" in past the velvet rope at the front door. I know that the club only has ten available seats left in it and I have Tom Cruise coming with his nine guests in an hour, and everybody else in the place told me that they were not going to leave until Tom got there. You are next in line and are begging me to let you in. Me, "sorry no room". You, "but I see the empty seats inside". Me, "sorry but Tom is going to be here in an hour, gotta save it for him". You, "but somebody surely will leave within the next hour and there will be room for everybody". Me, "sorry that's the way Tivo tells me to run the "door".
So you (probably the wife is doing it) gotta lighten up on the "save until I delete" button. If you want something new on it, tivo has to know that it can dump something to make room. Like I said, probably the thing that is biting you that you can't see is the shows in the queue to be recorded in the future that tivo is saving space for (damn Tom Cruise anyway).

I'd have beaten rminsk, if it hadn't been for that damned Tom Cruise slowing me down. ;)

You could always drop in a large IDE hard drive and never see that message again. I've never seen it on either of my upgraded units.

For a second or two there I was worried this thread might become another of these: Wife won't delete recordings (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=116633&highlight=wife+won+t+delete)

Or just watch some shows. I have a stock 70 hour R-10 and never come close to filling it. I try to watch what I record by the end of the weekend and/or burn to DVD anything I want to save.
