OK Guys,

I am going to upgrade my series 2 model #TCD24008A. I have read from a few sites on how to upgrade the hard drive. I noticed on the digitalinsurrection site that it says only ceratain model series 2 standalones (the higher number 500 ones) can take hard drives over 137gb. Can my series 2 take a hard drive bigger than this, I was thinking about adding a second B 300gb HD. I did notice people in these forums were saying they added sizes like 200 or dual 300's etc... but no one mentioned what model they had. I also saw they were selling HD upgrades on Ebay that are preloaded with the software needed and are larger than 140gb and say they will work with my model so I'm assuming I can handle a HD's bigger than 137gb.

I would just buy one of the ones off ebay for extra conveinience but all the ones on there talked about getting rid of your A drive. I see this as a waste of an extra 80gigs if I can put a secondary drive in.

What I need to know is what parts I need. I have been to like 5 different sites and everyone says I need different parts.

Also Can tivo support SATA or HD's.

I think the parts I need are

300gb HD
Required Screwdrivers
Software
Hard Drive Bracket

Questionable Items?
Y power splitter ?
Hard Drive standoff
Hard Drive Power Delay

thanks for the help guys

Don't add the drive, replace the one you have. Unless you have a significant drive in their already.

Crikey, that's a lot of questions... only ceratain model series 2 standalones (the higher number 500 ones) can take hard drives over 137gb. Can my series 2 take a hard drive bigger than thisYes, so long as your current software version is 5.x+ (most folks run the current 7.x now).
so I'm assuming I can handle a HD's bigger than 137gb.Yes, you're correct (proviso your tivo software version).

The hassle of a dual drive mount, the potential for power-supply issues, the extra heat & noise, and the pain of not having an easily installed backup to get you running in the event of a disk failure make replacing the 80GB with the 300GB a favorable proposition.
Also Can tivo support SATA or HD's.No, TiVo cannot support SATA drives, only IDE (PATA) drives (though I qualify this by saying that I haven't bothered trying IDE to SATA converters and the like).

thanks for the help guysIf you do choose to go with a dual-drive config, then you will need a four-pin molex power splitter as well as an full IDE cable, but again, by going with a single drive configuration, you reduce your needed supplies to the 300GB HD, Torx screwdrivers, and software not to mention decrease your mean time to recovery after a hard disk failure. Not to mention that the cost differential between a 300GB and 400GB drive probably outweighs the cost of the dual drive mounting bracket, power splitter, and power delay.
