I coudln't find a S3 available at my local BB so I ordered one online at Circuit City an received it last night... I have it up and running now in my home theater. I have two $100 gift cards for BB though and I called today and they have S3's in stock finally. I would like to purchase from BB using the gift cards and return the Circuity City unit. However it would be much simpler to me to purchase the BB unit and take it right over to Circuit City with my Circuit City web reciept and return that unopened box, rather than taking the BB unit home, installing it, re-packing the CC unit and returning that.
My question is, if I purchase the Best Buy 4 year warranty (yes I've read the thread on that, please don't bring that debate into this thread), is it tied to the serial number of the unit in any way? Or does the receipt simply say the Tivo S3 model number? I don't want to give the unopened BB unit to Circuit City and then need warranty service down the road and get denied due to serial's not matching. Anybody know for sure????

That's pretty low. Don't be lazy just do it the right way. It's already bad enough you are going to return a good working tivo back to CC just to buy another at best buy.
Why not jsut save the gift cards for your next purchase and let someone else in Tucson have a shot at a Series 3?
Your 4-year warranty probably will be useless anyway as it is abuse of their current system. Circuit City will sell you a 5-year plan for $90.

Why in the world is that low? He bought a new unit at Circuit City and he would be returning an new unopened unit, nothing wrong with that at all.

No kidding dude, there is nothing immoral about this... CC would be getting a brand new unopened unit back and I'm sure they won't refund my shipping fees, so they are out absolutly nothing v.s. me returing an opened box that they have to sell at a discounted open box price...

You might want to try buying from BB first before returning to CC... I couldn't get my local BB to add the warranty. They outright refused... bastards.

Only the fact that you couldn't wait and ordered from CC so you could get the S3 quicker. Now you want them to give you your money back and get it from best buy. You are really rewarding circuit city in this whole deal now aren't you? They provided you with great service and stock on line. And in the end you have a product that you bought from circui city.
Ask Circuit City (which would be out of your $800) if this is immoral.

Dude, take your thread crapping negative attitude back into your hole with you... I should feel bad because I'm returning an item that I can get cheaper elsewhere???? What are you a preist/engineer/counselor??? Get a life man. You have absolutely nothing to contribute to this thread.

Just use your $100 gift certs for something else that I'm sure you'll buy eventually. Save $200 now or save $200 later, it's all the same.
But it's not that low, returning one to CC because you can get it cheaper somewhere else. I'd recommend that you box up the one you have already though, I am not sure that anyone here knows if the warranty is tied to the S/N, but it would be pretty stupid if it weren't.

The TSN is usually printed on the same BB receipt they staple into the warranty card thingy.

Well that's basically what I'm wondering... I'm at work and don't have the box in front of me to look at but is the S/N or any unit-specific number on the outside of the box or is it totally generic. If the box is generic then there is no way for them to know the difference. Can someone who bought one look at their reciept and see if there is any S/N or anything besides the TiVo SKU?

The TSN is also on the outside of the box. Which is where BB scan the bar code from to put it on the receipt in the first place. :)

Yea, if they did it without it being serial # specific one could buy a TiVo without warranty, have it break and then go buy a new one with warranty, return it elsewhere and magically have warranty on the already broken unit. THAT would be awful. However, returning to CC wouldn't be the end of the world. They actually wouldn't be out any money at all. I'm sure they'll sell that unit relatively soon anyways. But I wouldn't plan on doing that if you're getting a warranty @ Best Buy.

Disagree with me if you wish. Circuit City is losing business. They would be out the $800 of your sale. Sure they would have a new box to sell to someone else, but that would be an additional consumer on top of the original purchase.
I like Best Buy as much as the next guy (my rewards account will certainly back that up), but I also like to reward Circuit City and give them business when they stock something or have better pricing than Best Buy. We need this otherwise BB won't have any real competition.
Sorry if you took such offense to my reasoning.

In my BB receipt the serial number is there. Also, the sale person wrote the serial number on the back of the warranty papers.
