This thread is not designed to pitt Tivo against Netflix. It's basically to help me decide whether to keep Netflix or not.
My cable co has a DigitalVision package (RCN) that gives me every movie channel and the extended cable channels except HBO for $20/month. I recently downgraded my Netflix account to 1/out at a time ($10/month) because I wasn't watching that many dvd's anymore (in part due to watching shows I've recorded and my Xbox 360 gaming).
I'm trying to decide whether or not to drop the digitalvision package and keep Netflix, drop Netflix and keep DigitalVision, or keep them both. Money isn't really the issue, but it's nice to save if you can.
On one hand, having all of these channels that I never watch is a bit overwhelming to comb thru. Not sure if they are worth $20/month, and to be honest, the only movies I would want to watch would be on the HD tier. One the other hand, it's nice to have a selection, especially if company comes over (which is rare).
I realize this is my decision, but I'm curious to know if others have pondered a similar matter?
We're on the Netflix path. While it is nice to have movie channels I tend to fill the Tivo with movies I never have time for.
While Netflix I am forced to watch them sooner, plus I can do tv series which cable doesn't have.
I did like having movie channels, but I would really only watch part of the movies or record them and never watch them so it was easy for us.

I'd say keep netflix and drop the move channels.. You get the extras on the DVDs, and obviously ALWAYS get movies you wanted to watch.

Money isn't really the issue, but it's nice to save if you can.i have a similar pay channel package to yours and i have netflix. i still get about 10 dvd's per month from netflix. i can't say how many movies and series i watch on the pay channels, but i don't feel that either one is wasted.

For me, it's netflix. The DVD's have 5.1 surround, and are widescreen, like my TV. The movie channels offered to me show the majority of their content Fullscreen.

I have Netflix & no movie channels. Cheaper monthly for Netflix than to add movie channels to my cable bill and I get the movies I want instead of when the movie channels decide to air them.

Cancel both and buy $30/month of DVD's, then you can watch them over again for free.

I agree with Kid Icarus. I do the same thing.

I also prefer Netflix over movie channels cause you get access to pretty much EVERY movie and TV Show!!! that alone should do it :)

+1 as well for me. With the Sereis 2 TiVo I did not even need to get the digital channel as all I wanted was a DVR - saved me 35$ a month right there
That "no digital" decision was made easier by the availability of Netflix and its long queue of movies and past seasons of TV shows and HBO/Showtime shows.
so for TiVo itself (multiple boxes - 6 tuners and 700 hours of space) I paid 450 upfront, 180 for a hard drive and 300 lifetime on one with 2 MSD so say 14$ a month. been using for 24 months.
930$/35$(cable extra a month for one DVR) = 26.5 months. so hardware and lifetime break even in a few months.
now it is $35 a month vs 14$ a month and within 10 months that will come out ahead and all I lack is HD which I have decided to hold off on adopting anyhow - and Digital tier of cable which I do not want anyhow

I get neither. If we want to watch a newer movie we order and record PPV. If not, we wait for freeview weekends and record a bunch of stuff for later viewing. If we miss something and its on regular TV, I don't mind watching those because we can skip through commercials so fast. Not sure if all those choices are available to you but I thought I would add my .02. I figure I pay for Tivo service and DTV programming I should try to use it to the fullest. Besides, I've gotten too lazy to mess with DVDs and I like the Tivo experience (ff, rewind, 8 sec replay, etc) much better.

Thank you all. I went over the channels and realized that I would only look at about 2-3 of those channels if that. Not worth it. I had assumed that getting the cable card meant that I had to get their enhanced package. It doesn't. Also, I forgot that with the Tivo you can choose which channels you want to come up, so I can really customize it to my use.
I'm going to keep with the 1/at a time package. I can get about 2 a week if it's mailed right out. I'm totally fine with 1 a week though. It pays for itself after 2 DVD's.
Thanks again!

I don't have netflix or movie channels. I sent my daughter out to get a part-time job at a local movie/game rental store, and she brings me just about any game/movie I'd want from their selection - I just have to have it back in the drop box by 10am the next morning, and it costs me nothing. Plus it gives my daughter gas money to boot!

So...2 DVD's per month?
