View Full Version : Dish Network ViP622 MRV vs. TiVo S3 MRV
Ever since they stripped MRV from the S3 launch, I've been wondering what technology Dish Network is using for MRV and why TiVo can't do the same?
My home is pre-wired with co-ax outs in every room. My HDTV is in my family room, and my SDTV is in the loft. I have the ViP hooked up to the HDTV, and the SDTV has no set-top box. It plugs straight into the wall. Using an RF remote from the loft, I guess the ViP "broadcasts" back out through the cabling so I can plug a TV into any outlet and watch whatever is recorded downstairs, or watch another program...it's basically taking up one of the tuners and it also down-converts to SD.
I've racked my brain about, one, how they do this (beats me) and two, why TiVo wouldn't be able to do this too (patents maybe? bandwidth limitation?)

The 622 doesn't do MRV - it has a SD output on RF ch4 or whatever and you can pipe that to a 2nd TV and have seperate control of it via an RF remote.
The programming itself never leaves the original box.
In some ways it's a better solution (especialy for SD content!), but I like MRV.

Ah, yes! I do remember the tech saying channel 73 or something like that...thank you!
So, combining the two replies, MRV is not a tech limitation but because of CableCard Labs? Is it a combo of both?

actually it can and does leave the box if you have more then two TV's.
Its kind of a cool trick - almost like a closed circuit security system. Since many homes have pre-wired coax the VIP622 makes use of that cable and sets up the closed circuit (the VIP boxes still need a good RG6 coax lead from the dish) - then each box "broadcasts" its feed over the coax on an analog channel - you tune your TV to that analog channel and you have the feed.
I'll say its no MRV that is for sure!!!!! but its better then what the S3 has (at least as of this post - I hope tivo proves me wrong but I doubt it as its not them doing it - blast cablelabs)

I guess the key word is "analog" - that's why no HD for the second TV - well then MRV on an S3 in HD would trump the ViP's method (if it ever happens).
TiVo's site is very lacking in explanations of MRV (just general marketing speak) but what else does MRV do on the TiVo besides make programs available from another TiVo?

If they'd do that trick to use ATSC vs NTSC so a HD tuner equipped TV on the far end can watch HD people would buy in droves  .
