View Full Version : Dual Tuner - bad reception on one station (CBS)

I have two dual tuner S2's at home. I purchased both of them from Amazon.com within the first few weeks they became available.
On both units, Channel 4 (CBS) comes in horribly. The reception is all staticy. It looks like its just one of the tuners on each box that has static on this station. Its very odd that both DT S2's would act this way.
I also have a line from the splitter going directly into the back of the TV, so I can watch live TV while both Tuners are recording shows. The reception from the build in TV tuner is crystal clear on all stations.
Does anyone else have this problem? I want to upgrade the Hard Drives in both units but don't want to if the units are faulty.

I don't have this specific problem. But I do have a reception problem that varies from TV to TV. It seems to depend on the signal strength and the tuner within the TV. Presumably something about the combinationof the two doesn't work for you on CBS. Check with your cable provider,

Since the video going from the splitter to the TV is good, try swapping the outputs of the splitter, i.e. take the line that is going to the TV and swap it with the Tivo and then the one from the Tivo put that one into the TV. That way you can tell if the splitter is bad.
Or by having three items drawing down the signal level you might need a powered splitter.
Every time you use a non-powered splitter you chop the signal way down.
I have a total of 9 outputs from my main feed. After I added the second splitter the video on certain channels was very poor. I installed a powered splitter and everything has been hunky-dory :)

I did a test where I took the main cable line coming in from the house and plugged it directly into the TiVo box. And I still had the same problem as above. This was with no splitters and a direct connection.

I've been having issues with CBS on both of my Series 2 single tuner TiVo's. I have only had this issue with CBS. Sometimes it even says signal not strong enough for the DVR to record, even though we are actually watching it live. ??? Are you in the Dallas/Fort Worth area?

I have two DTs with a splitter to them both - one DT has really bad sound on only comedy central (58 I think) and the other is just fine. I have not taken time to figure it out yet

You haven't had this problem with CBS.
You've had it with a local channel, possibly one on a cable system.
In the past TiVos have been known to have weak tuners.
Cable companies sometimes drop the power on certain channels.
I've actually had to call my cable company and ask them to boost it. They tell me they have no idea what I'm talking about and I demand to speak to their superior.
While they've got me on hold, the problem mysteriously goes away.
Mind you, they already know where I live, so can access their amps in my neighborhood by remote while I'm sitting there waiting....and then hanging up.
