My S3 is scheduled to arrive this week but my appointment for Comcast to deliver my cablecards is next week. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to running my initial setup with just basic cable (99 channels) and adding cablecards later? I assume I need my lan connection working first but what about the cablecard connect?

I bought a cheep antenna and could use OTA HD so I went ahead and did the setup.

I re-guided setup after the CableCARD intall. I noticed the Re-Do-Guided Setup actually went all the way back to the "almost there" boot up screen. I don't think the S2s did that. All of my season passes were there though, but I had to re-do them to cut over to the cable-HD channels rather than the OTA-channels.

I'd go ahead and set things up just to make sure everything's working before the installer gets there. That way, if there are any network issues, or a bad cord, or something, it'll all be resolved and hopefully the card install will go more smoothly as a result.

Good thinking. I will set it up in advance

yes, run setup first, then rerun after you get cablecards

Plus, you will get a software update after the first connection which could possibly fix some cable card issues for all we know.

There's a potential advantage to doing the guided setup w/o cablecards and then forcing the the tivo to call home a few times: if there's a pending software upgrade available, it will pull it down in the first or second regular call after guided setup completes.

I've seen at least one comment saying that boxes currently arrive from the factory with 8.0.1 installed, and are downloading 8.0.1a after activation.

Given the maturity of cablecard technology, I'd want the tivo to be running the newest code available when activating the cablecards.
