Is there a shortcut to put the S3 into standby mode? I run the sound through a reciever, so turning off the TV leaves the sound on to the receiver & you can't turn the receiver off w/ the S3 remote. Currently, I am muting the sound when the TV is off, but i was wondering if there is a better way.

I cannot answer your question, but perhaps you should purchase a remote that can control all of your components. This way, you can turn your receiver off.
OR
Use your receiver remote to turn off the receiver.

Universal remotes are your friend. I love my Phillips Pronto, but the Logitech Harmony remotes are great.

You can program the "TV Power" button to control the power of both your TV and receiver. After you program the "TV Power" button to switch your TV off and on program the "TV Power" button again but use the codes for your receiver.
It worked on mine, the only weird things was the code I needed for the power was not the same as the code I needed to program the volume and mute.
Good luck.
I have a bose freestyle speaker package, and the code doesn't exist for it. So, I programmed the volume up/down, and mute buttons, but turning off the tv leaves the audio on from the Toslink. I have a harmony remote, but I like the idea of using the tv remote for everything as it has been designed so well. Does anyone use the harmony 880 remote? Do you like it for controlling a tivo?

I've got a Universal MX-850 remote and would love to know the answer to this question as well. Is there a discrete command for standby?

Here is a list of the Pronto hex codes for the Standby button...

My MX-950 had a Standby command in the TiVo command set, so I suspect the 850 will too. I think I just used the Series 2 TiVo command set.
I loaded my xbox harmony remote with the commands from the web, and the PowerOn and PowerOff don't work like I'd want them too. They have a PowerToggle though, and it does turn the unit on and off. The PowerOn button simply was the tivo button and brought the unit out of standby.
I really prefer discrete codes as they are so much better, but I can't seem to find a way to guarantee it will be in sync. I may just leave the device on all the time as the harmony turns off my stereo just fine.

I have an 880 and I use it for controlling my Series 2 as of now, havent used it with the Series 3 yet. I like using the 880 since I have so many components in my HT that it is a pain to use 4 remotes to control them all. I have always thought that the response time from the remote to the Tivo was less then the origional Tivo remote, this took some getting used to at first but it doesn't bug me any more. Its almost wierd going back to the quick response time of the Tivo we have in the bedroom.

I use an 880 to control an S1 and and S2 (my S3 isn't here yet). I think it works great (almost as well as the Sony Series 1 remote, which is to me the gold standard).
One bummer about the 880 is that the FF, REW and Play buttons are low on the remote and hard to find by feel. I changed my config to use the up/down arrows under the 4-way navigator for FF and REW - even though there's no Play button nearby, this works well b/c you can press FF or REW 3x for the ultra-fast speed and a 4th time to go back to normal Play mode.
I will say this though - Harmony (aka Logitech) customer service is CRAP - they shipped a bunch of 880's (including mine) with loose battery contacts, and getting them to address it took forever, and required jumping through lots of procedural and diagnostic hoops even though the problem was well documented, and the solution merely involved them sending a little rubber spacer to keep the battery closer to the contacts.
But it is a pretty good remote, especially if you like tactile, one-handed controls. You can rely on the touch screen minimally if you program the buttons carefully.
As for the response time, I notice the same thing when controlling a HUMAX S2 (and when changing inputs on my TV), but not with my Sony S1. I haven't had time to dig into this, but I think the remote is deliberately spacing the IR emissions apart for these devices. I seem to recall seeing somewhere in the 880 config that you can change this for individual components, but I haven't looked into it further than that.

If you want discrete codes for nearly any device, have a look at:
http://www.remotecentral.com/ (http://www.remotecentral.com)
If anyone has it, they will. I'd even bet a discrete code for your Bose exists.
I have an original Philips Pronto (TSU-1000), and I use a macro on it to control all the on/off switching functions of my A/V system, then once everything is on, I use the TiVo remote for the tactile feel. I don't have to look at it to use it.
Hope that helps.

Does anyone have the discrete codes for the series 3? I have a pronto that I need to program and always like the clean codes for the buttons vs. "Learning" the IR.
Also, they aren't listed on remotecentral yet.
