I tried to turn on cartoons for the kids on my Humax DRT 800 yesterday. I quickly found out that it was dead. Lights are out on the front, the HD doesn't spin up, and the fan on the rear is motionless. I did notice a spark when I plug it into the wall socket slowly, so I know the circuit is closing somewhere.

I removed it from the game room, let it sit for 24 hours, and tried to power it up again today. Still nothing.

This box was first purchased on 12/04. It was replaced under warranty about a year ago. Obviously I'm beyond the warranty period. I called support and they just told me that it would cost $250 to swap this out with a new or reman (whichever is available). Seems a bit steep to me for a box that in my experience has trouble staying in service for more than a year.

Anyone had a similar experience? Any possibility that I can repair this thing on my own? Quick search on the P/N for the power supply turned up nothing.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Silly question, but could the short be in the power cable?

Meaning: have you tried swapping out the cable?

Good idea (above and beyond the help I got from Humax support)! I swapped the cable out with one that we use on our first Series 2; same result.

I'm afraid, I have no other solution, except for obtaining a digital multimeter, and checking the DC output from the PSU to determine whether it surely is the PSU that is faulty.

If it is, perhaps you could purchase a replacement from Humax and install it yourself. I have replaced the Hard Drive on mine, which physically easier than same operation on most PC's, I wouldn't expect the PSU to pose any difficulties either.
