Hi all,

Our trusty 80 hr SVR-2000's hard drive has started clicking & freezing every now & then - like every month or so. We don't have lifetime

Since we've had a tivo since 2000, we can't bear the thought of not having one and figure we'd better just replace it.

Given our current setup & requirements, which do you think we should get? We're thinking the DT, but want to make sure

A sony 53" RP TV which is about 7 years old. We don't plan on replacing it within the next year or so.
Cablevision - currently we don't have a cable box (we just returned it), but they're just starting to offer TCM, so we're going to get it back
We're not really networked at home, but will plan on trying to do it. We will have the ability to hard-wire the Tivo to broadband (versus using wireless).

IF the answer is the DT, it appears that the best deal is from Tivo itself. We looked at best buy and they have the 80 hr unit for $249 with $190 rebate.

Another question..... since we don't have lifetime, should we even bother replacing the hard drive on the Sony?

Thanks for all your help.... it was sooo much easier when there only was 1 type of tivo to deal with ;).

How can you go wrong for $59 to purchase a DT to replace a 6 year old S!? (Especially since you do not have LT). I paid $79 for a single tuner S2 last Dec.

Buy the DT now and when you replace your TV in the future with a HD set (probably will be the only ones available in a year or so) you can always move up to an S3. If you keep the DT it will work just fine with the new TV, it just will not record in HD.

The cost of the new hard drive on the Sony will be almost twice the cost of the DT.

Thanks. That's what I thought.

But, we don't have a S1 - we sold that one 3 years ago. The Sony is a S2 and is probably one of the last models they offered.

What about the offer from Tivo directly? Isn't that a better deal than the $59 from BB?

The svr-2000 is an S1. The svr-3000 is an S2

The $150 rebate (not $190) required that the Tivo be purchased by 9/16/06 - as in yesterday.
You can get the DT from Tivo for $30 + $12.95/mo rather than one of the regular bundle prices, but I can't find the link that someone posted within the last couple of days.

Found it - thanks alansplace. It looks like it's expired, but you may still be able to get it.

I see that Tivo started a new $150 rebate for purchases between 9/17 and 10/31

I tried it out and I can add it to my cart, fill in all of my information and get all the way to the "place order" option, so I'd say that you can still get it as long as the webpage is still there.

We ended up purchasing the 160 hour DT directly from Tivo with a one year plan. We figured we'd need the space to hold all those TCM movies we've been wanting to watch but could not because our cable company didn't offer it.

I'm going to try to subscribe the second unit for the $6.95 per month until it dies, as I really don't think we need it.

Anyone know if the DT remote will also control the TV (on-off)? Since our current Tivo & TV are both Sony we didn't need to use the TV's remote unless we were switching to another tuner or going to the VCR.
