I have a Series 2 Tivo and wireless adapter. I moved recently, and switched from a DSL connection to a cable modem. Anyway, ever since I moved to a cable modem my laptop won't connect to the Internet wirelessly. Occasionally, it says it's connected to the router, but after a couple of minutes, the wireless connection drops and the dreaded red X shows up on the wireless symbol in the bottom right corner of my screen. I can't open a web page unless I'm connected to the router with a cable.
What perplexes me is that my Tivo has no problem connecting to the router, maintaining the connection AND making daily or hourly connections as needed. So I know the router is able to obtain and use an IP address. Back when I had a DSL modem, I had IP address issues with my Tivo, where it was stealing my laptop's IP address. I eventually assigned the Tivo adapter its own static IP address and that fixed it.
Why in the world would my Tivo be able to connect to the router and communicate, yet my laptop drop any connection and never allow me to surf wirelessly? I've tried assigning a static IP address to my laptop, I've turned off MAC filtering on my router and done several hard resets of the router. Nothing works. I have Windows XP (which may or may not be the problem). I'm at my wits end. Anyone heard of this? Help!
