View Full Version : Questions about transferring between Tivos!

So, my girlfriend aleady had a Tivo (that's on her account). I had a spare Tivo (on my account) that I wasn't using and I took it over to her house for her to use.

At the moment, they are in seperate rooms. Before I go and buy the stuff to network them together, does anyone know if they will be able to transfer video back and forth (since they are on different accounts)? I assume they can - but I'd like to be sure.

Second, she does not have high speed internet, but I'm planning on setting up a wireless connection between the Tivos (assuming that they can see each other). I know that wireless cards can be set up as an ad-hoc network (without a router). Can I do this with the Tivos? Or must I have a router?

Thanks for your help!

They need to be on the same account (or both be hacked) in order to transfer content between them.

That's right. Tivos need to be on the same account (which gives them the same MAK) to share content.

I would think that if the Tivos were connected to a network - even an adhoc network - that wasn't connected to the internet, that they'd stop getting guide data automatically. Am I wrong? anyone.

Call TiVo and move the spare TiVo to her account and all will be fine (assuming there isn't a nasty breakup and a TiVo custody fight in the future).

Wouldn't changing accounts require a new contract with a 1yr commitment? If so, he'd better make sure this is "the one". ;)

Tivo was planning to allow Users to share with at most 10 other Tivos.

But this plan got dumped I think. (or lurking). It was back in the day when they were talking about having a dongle on your computer for transfers.

Geez. Anybody remember that? I'm gettin old.

rushl23,

Search this forum and look for a thread started by a guy that took his Tivo over to his girlfriends house, long stroy short he never got it back

Anyone remember that post? He was trying to get Tivo to stop service to it or something.

I don't know if they actually were planning on it, or if that project is on the back burner, but they did get FCC approval for such a scheme, IIRC.

How would that work with the 1-year commitment?

Say I get two DT's and I used them for a couple months but didnt want one, I then take the un-used one and set it up in her house...

do I move the account to her and pay the cancellation fee? or since I "found" someone to take it over there is no fee??

We can say from experience that TiVo forces the merged accounts. My wife has on two separate occasions attempted to get a TiVo of her own for her specific programming. We couldn't file transfer unless she merged the accounts. So, she would try it for a while, get annoyed about that flaw with the design and then throw her TiVo on my account.

I've been trying to merge my girlfriends tivo and mine together for like a week now, called twice, might have to call again

JUST ADD THEM TO THE SAME ACCOUNT, AHHH

that is the gray area we are not sure of. you can impress her with your committement and move her TiVo to your account and avoid that hassle. TiVo might just accomodate that with no penalty on anything.

and yes the TiVos just have to be on the same account and on the same network. so an ad hoc wireless network will be fine and then keep on using the phone line to get guide data. TiVo DVR is fine with both being active and telling it which to use for updates
