Hello - I just purchased a Samsung Plasma television. I have Charter Digital and just upgraded to their HD tier. Charter just installed a new HD box. I have a Series II TIVO DVR which I purchased in January 2006.
Here are my problems:
1. In order to watch the HD programming, I have to switch to Component 2. I cannot get TIVO to work with this.
2. In order to watch TIVO or a DVD, I have to switch to Component 1.
3. In Component 1 I can record an HD channel, but when I replay it, it is not in HD.
I would like to record HD programs (either as I am watching them by selecting the SELECT button or programming the TIVO to record the HD channel) onto my TIVO and then watch them on my television.
Is this possible? Do I need a new HD TIVO? Charter, which is pushing their crappy DVR system, is not any help.
Thank you.

Thank you. you need a sereies 3 tivo (http://www.tivo.com/2.0.3hdDvr.plt.asp) for recording high definition.

You can use a Standard Def Tivo to record HD programming.
Set your cable box to work with a Standard Def/analog television device, and feed the audio and video into your TiVo.
The downconverted video will record on the Series 2 TiVo just fine.
The problem comes when you want to play it back.
All you'll get is the downconverted picture. It won't be HD.
I think you've discovered this already.
I am just a little curious about one thing, Peter-
You say you have your HD cable feeding into the TV thru the "#2" inputs, and apparently you're getting a high def picture. You also say you're getting the TiVo thru the "#1" inputs, but that you're able to record stuff from the HD box onto your TiVo.
How are you doing this?
Does the cable box have two sets of outputs? How do you have it set so that you get HD on the TV but the TiVo can still record the video signal?
If there ARE two sets of cable box outputs, can you give each output a different screen resolution setting?

I am not that tech savvy, but this is what I can record:
1. For example, Charter's channel 777 is ESPNHD. Under Component 1 you can watch the channel, but it is not in HD. You can record this channel on the TIVO, but you might as well be recording regular non-HD ESPN.
2. While I am watching channel 777, if I switch the source to Component 2, I get an HD picture, but I can no longer use the TIVO.
This whole argument sounds mute anyway, since my series II will not record in HD. After buying the new plasma TV, I am not looking forward to shelling out another $700 for series III TIVO.
Thanks for your help.
