So my modded TiVo is dead. It started life as a 60 Hr Series 2, and ended life with a pair of 120 GB drives in it.

I tried replacing the power supply with a new one from Weaknees, and it was better (actually got to the Please Wait screen instead of just sitting there with a black screen), but it's kaput.

Has anyone had any luck with getting a repair from TiVo on something like this? I'm very much out of warranty, but I do have a lifetime subscription.

Or do I just need to shell out the $1K ( ) and get a Series3?

You should probably try replacing the drive(s). Or shell out the cash for an S3 if thats too much work.

Yeah, I'm going to test the drives tomorrow--I know that the PSU was bad, it wasn't working at all before I fixed that. Now it's just not booting.

Trust me, I'd much rather replace drives than shell out for an S3.

OK, stupid question time. Is it possible to run a disk check using MFSTools? I cannot find the info on how to do that in the MFSTools instructions. I do see that I can force an MFS check if I can get the TiVo up far enough, but I've only had it come up to the second screen once. Now it gets stuck on the first "Please wait..." screen.

I really, really want this not to be the mobo...

Cancel that, I reseated all of the cables and left it sitting there for awhile, and hey presto! Working TiVo! :D

Replacing with an S3 really isn't the next step.

That's right. There's cursing, sacrificing of chickens; many many steps, suffice it to say.
