I have an RCA DVR40, about 1 yr old,never had any problems. I go on vacation for 2 weeks, leave unplugged, come home plug in boot up and no sound. Restart 5 or 6 times and sound comes back. After 2 days right in the middle of the day, sound goes out, restart and comes back. Next day sound out again, multiple reboots and no sound. When this happens, I CAN play a recorded show and it DOES have sound.... anyone have any ideas?

thanks in advance!

Tell us more about your equipment ....
* Brand/model TV?
* Brand/model AV Receiver (if you're using one)
* How is the Tivo connected to your TV or AV Receiver (cables, connectors, inputs/outputs)?
* Do you have other sources connected to your TV? Do they also have this problem?
* Have you replaced any cables?

* Brand/model TV? - RCA 36"
* Brand/model AV Receiver (if you're using one) - None
* How is the Tivo connected to your TV or AV Receiver (cables, connectors, inputs/outputs)? - sat x 2 --> Tivo (coax) --> TV
* Do you have other sources connected to your TV? Do they also have this problem? No
* Have you replaced any cables? Yes - patch cable between tivo & tv, also tried to go audio out to tv audio in.... why would a recorded show have sound when live tv does not?

I have spent most of the day reading forum posts, so now I wonder if the hard drive has an issue possibly or the o/s? I don't know a whole lot about the guts of the tivo....other than it runs basically on a modified linux kernel

Since this problem appeared, do your Recordings still have audio, or are they silent?

I doubt it's a hard drive issue. Most likely a flakey tuner or audio circuitry.

Have further reboots brought back the audio? Do you hear Tivo sound effects?

Recordings are all fine

Reboots sometimes do and sometimes dont. I spent a long time on the phone with DTV and after 6 reboots it finally came back. Another time it came back on first restart.

No once the sound goes we hear nothing

Sure sounds like a flakey motherboard problem. Not an easy problem to fix, unfortunately.
