well I bought Humax DVD recorder with lifetime subscription off ebay the other day and used it for about 4 days constant with no problems, well today I thought it would be safe to complete the ebay transaction (which the guy has been really working and dealing with me thus far with some small questions) got the Humax switched over to my name and with in 10min after getting off the phone with tivo the Humax just randomly shuts off then boots back up... I thought that was weird and thought maybe it was just updating to a new member (seeing as how I just switched it over to my name) then about 2 hours later bam does it again except this time I had to unplug the thing to get it to start back up (it kept cycling threw the power up stage and restarting) well about 2 hours ago it went off and now it’s not coming back on no matter what I do... anyone know anything I can do to get it back on?

I was reading the boards and it seems there are a lot of people going threw the random restart thing (but from what I read no one has had it just not come back on) this is crazy I just bought it and it’s in perfect condition, it even has the upgraded hard drive along with lifetime and wireless USB connection
it seems a little odd this would happen right after I updated it and put it in my name... it also seems odd that everyone else is having a similar problem (tivo better watch out if I find it’s the stupid update that jacked this up I will be calling for a class action)

It's not the upgrade itself that causes this. When the TiVo downloads the upgrade, it installs it on a different part of the hard drive. If there is a bad sector on that part of the hard drive, it will reboot over and over. Do you think trying to do the emergency reinstall will work? The process of waiting for the green light to change to yellow on the welcome powering up screen, and then hitting pause 52?
If not, buy a new hard drive from weaknees.com and install it and it'll be fine.

Unless the reboot was at 2AM, it wasn't an upgrade. TiVo doesn't apply updates until 2AM, when it reboots to install them. So if the reboot started sometime during the day, it was probably something else.

And if the unit has an upgraded harddrive, it is possible to do those incorrectly in such a way that a box will choke when it goes to upgrade later, also making swap too small can kill a box down the road.

i also just got a drt400 off ebay, and it worked great for a week, and then it started the random restarts. now, it restarts, and never gets past the welcome on the front screen. i called humax today, and they're sending me a new unit. i also bought this because of the lifetime subscription. i was going to upgrade the drive, but now i'm wondering if this thing has other issues. i've searched and found quite a bit of problems with these dvd recorder tivos. its funny, until it updated, there were no issues. how can a brand new unit have its harddrive fail so soon?
