View Full Version : Is the series3 the first way to get digital cable onto your computer?

The one thing that excites me most about the Series3 is the cablecard tuner, and the possibility of TTG. With TTG, it should be possible to transfer recordings off the tivo onto your computer in full digital quality. This is the FIRST time that there has been a possibility of this. The only other product that does this is ATI's OCUR, a cablecard tuner for Vista which hasn't been released yet, and probably won't be availible to order for end users.
The series3 is the first box that can (possibily, contingent on TTG) digitally record encrypted shows from digital cable and transfer them to a PC. To me, this is the most exciting thing, even moreso than the HD features of the Series3.

TTG is not activated on the S3s.

No TTG, no MRV. Tivo is still working on that with Cable Labs.

I know. I thought he was being sarcastic. He doesn't honestly think that this is the first time it's possible for a dvr to transfer digitally recorded shows to a computer does he?
The series 2 has been doing this for years and the series 3 doesn't do that at all.
He was being sarcastic. Had to be.

He wasn't joking. The recordings on an S2 aren't fully digital, like he mentioned in the OP. They're analog going into the S2.

What about Firewire transfers from the Motorola 6412/3412? They're pure digital...

And in some areas the cable company hasn't turned on the 5C encryption for FireWire so people are able to capture via FireWire to their PCs a pure digital signal. In fact that's where a lot of the content on BitTorrent comes from.

Don't forget PCI & USB HD tuners for PCs that can also record unencrypted QAM along with the above mentioned firewire capture. None of them are as convenient/easy means of recording as the S3 which I thought would be the best method of doing so if only TTG had been enabled for capturing non 5C protected content. I know the jury is still out on that one but the prospects don't look all that good. Tivo/Cox promises to be a better solution than the S3 to me (though I wouldn't be surprised if it's even further crippled than the S3) and a heck of a lot cheaper as well and no worries about hardware breaking or long term service commitments.

S3 might be the first way NOT to get digital cable onto your computer. ;)

Good grief. Some people need to read before they post.
I predict: TTG will NEVER happen. MRV is a slight possibility. Very slight.
But if Tivo gets the go ahead for MRV, the cable companies will jump on board to provide that functionality, probably very late.

Verizon FiOS provides MRV today on its DVRs -- albeit for an extra $7.00/mo over the cost of the HDTV DVR -- which streams SD recordings to any two standard set-top boxes in your home. Two upgrades for this are in the works -- the first expands MRV to four TVs, and the second upgrade (coming late 1Q or 2Q 2007) adds support for streaming HDTV channels around the house.
The content is never actually copied to the other boxes, it is streamed in realtime.
Verizon FiOS uses set-top boxes with MoCA -- 100Mbps networking over coax cable.

I never thought of that! Duh!
I always assumed it was PC tuner cards.

Any numbers on which feature is used more on the S2, MRV or TTG? I would think MRV would be more widely utilized, and therefore a more important feature to get working.

BS.
If TiVo can't get MRV approved it'll be a cold day in Hell.

The HR10-250 is the first way to get HDTV to your computer - not officially supported though.

The allthouth OCUR devices will record on a PC, it will surely be locked down from doing anything with it beyond watching it, or likely sending it to approved clients.
With T2G and MRV, the most is they could allow MRV on all non CP protected content, and restrict T2G from cablecard content.

Yes, but FIOS isn't Cable and the Cable Co's control cable labs basically.
I highly doubt Cable labs will ever let TTG or MRV happen (although I would be HAPPY to be proven wrong in the next 3 months and have both allowed).
