So say I have a series3 with cablecards installed, and I wanted to bring the tivo to a friends house (approx. 3 miles away), will it still be able to receive the channels? Or does cablecard have some technology that makes it so it has to stay in the home that it was originally installed in?

I'm not positive but I dont think that would work. The cable cards are activated to the cable you have in your house.

I think it depends on the cable system. Are they the same cable company? If not, no way will it work.

If they are the same cable company, it might work. Back when I had Adelphia, during my move, I could take things to my new and old place, and they would keep working (granted, I was paying for regular cable at both locations).

Both places do have cable, both are Comcast.

Both places do have cable, both are Comcast. They would both need to be on the same headend as well. Try it and see.

I've done this with a digital cable box and it works. Does that mean it's on the same headend?
