OK, So I compare and S3 with an S2. The service is for the software functionality, maintenance and ongoing guide data. Fair enough the latter two are the same as the S2 but what about functionality. I get more key features with my S2, TTG, MRV etc. Shouldn't the monthly service on an S3 be a little less - say more in line with a cable DVR that it is more aligned with? $9.95 anybody? Are we paying for something that we are not getting?

I know the S3 has HD but I paid $800 more than an S2 for all that hardware to make that possible.

I consider the $799 I paid covering the cost of functionality.

If I get more features later on, that's terrific.

I consider the monthly fee covering the guide data and bug fixes, nothing more. I would pay the same fee for a series 1 if it wasn't lifetimed, so by your logic I should pay less for that one, too.

Maybe the series 2 is the real steal at $12.95 as it has more features than S1 and S3?

But time and time again I read people saying the higher price of the TiVo service is because it has more functioanlity than the cable DVR's which is fair. So on this basis some of the $12.95 is to do with functioanlity and the S3 has less.

So you're saying that you wouldn't have minded TiVo bumping their monthly price every time they rolled out a new feature like TTG or MRV? I can only imagine the screams that would have generated... Can't have it both ways.

It may have less now, but some of that functionality will come later. If they then raised the price of service I can imagine the whining we would hear!

It all depends on what the monthly fee really pays for. IIRC, Tivo has never promised any software upgrades for the fee, or tied functionality to the fee, so I consider it just guide data, albeit the machines won't work without it, and fixing bugs.

Series 1 owners pay the same monthly fee as Series 2 and have a distinctly reduced set of features.

But remember previously the S2 did not have MRV, TTG, or KidZone and the price was $12.95. Maybe Tivo should raise the prices on the S2s to cover the extra features. Let see how well that goes over.

No, I think that's petty. The S1's pay the same price, remember. The DVD boxes didn't have features for a while either.

Then you're back to - well, the S2DT and S3 have dual tuners, so maybe they should charge more.

Who the heck knows. For all we know TiVo might have launched at $899 if the box was fully functional.
