I'm sure this has to be in one of the long threads, but the 3 year pre-paid plan is only $299 (special limited offer)which comes to $8.31/month for 3 years.

That's a pretty good deal for a new subscriber who doesn't already own one so they can use MSD.

I wonder if you can use MSD on a second box, if your first box is 3 years pre-paid?

If you buy the second box retail, then yes you can get MSD. Prepaid subscriptions count as a first Tivo to make other Tivos able to get MSD.
