I had a very annoying experience this morning, and you guys are not going to like it...
I stopped by BestBuy in Framingham MA this morning on the way to work to see if they happened to have any S3s in stock. I took a quick look around, and didn't see any. I then went to the desk in the Home Theater department and two gentlemen were standing there: a BestBuy employee and a ComCast representative. Each had a shirt and logo which represented their companies.
I asked... "do you have any series threes in stock"? I purposely left the word "Tivo" out, as I was testing their awareness of the products existance. The response was... "huh?". I repeated myself, and got more blank stares. I then said the new Tivo unit which was released yesterday. The BestBuy guy said... "ah, that's typical of Tivo... they release a new product and don't send us any. We're usually the last to get them because of our size. If they send them to us nobody else can have them. I wouldn't expect to see them here for another 3-4 weeks". I told him that they had exclusive rights for the first couple weeks. He said, "well I don't know what to tell you, we don't have any". Mind you... he didn't even check the computer which was right in front of him.
The Comcast guy then spoke-up... "do you subscribe to comcast"? I said yes. He said, " what do you want a tivo for, comcast has a DVR which does the same thing, plus it can record high-definition and digital programming". I said, I've seen the comcast box, and wasn't impressed with its interface, capacity, or reliability. Plus, the new tivo series3 can also record high-definition and digital programming from cable. He said, a Tivo will never be able to record HDTV since the channels are encrypted, and require a comcast cable box to decrypt them. He was quite assertive, and confident in his answer. I said the S3 can, since it accepts cableCARDs, which addresses that very issue. The comcast rep then said, comcast would never support that and it'll never work. The BestBuy guy then chimed-in, saying CableCARDs are only one-way, and therefore wont work. I said, (and at this point I'm starting to wonder why I'm still there), you only need the two-way CableCARD 2.0 standard for PPV and VOD. They both rolled their eyes, and disagreed with the obviously ignorant customer before them.
The Comcast rep said, "trust me, I know what I'm talking about, I'm an expert in this area, and looked down to his shirt logo. He said, "we had meetings with Tivo, and Tivo will never be able to work with a cablecard, this is why tivo-based comcast boxes will be coming out soon." He again tried to persuade me to go with a comcast DVR. I told the "expert" that the FCC requires by law that comcast and other large cable companies support cablecards, and tivo S3 is a new CableLabs certified product which used them to record HD content. I then suggested that he do some research on the subject, and I finally walked away.
I don't believe these guys were lying to me per se, but they were grossly misinformed (and arrogant).
This goes to show what kind of uphill battle Tivo faces with the S3 product. The retail partners and cable providers don't have a clue. The only people who know about the S3 are the people already in line to buy one: tivo fanatics (perhaps you know the type). The word isn't out there.
As for me.... the experience left me sour.
I will not be buying an S3 from BestBuy.
