I talked to a Tivo rep today to transfer my lifetime from my very first TIVO, and the rep told me that unless I got the newsletter with the special URL, I can't get the transfer.

Ridiculous. Does anyone have the "link?"

*sigh*

Will this work even if I go get a box at best buy?

seems pretty clear-cut

"Offer good for all subscribers with an existing paid Product Lifetime Service subscription."

But, the unit had to be ordered from the VIP site, did you do that?

No, I didn't know I had to -- I just found out about it the day after I ordered the product with a 3 year prepaid, so I guess I'm just hosed. Also was an idiot and ordered it ground. UGH. Not doing well.

Return that and rebuy it again

No problem, just refuse shipment when it arrives. Any TiVo can be returned within 30 days for a refund regardless of reason.

Yeah, I'd return it if they're gonna give you the run-around.

side-issue (and I sincerely don't want to derail):

My wife and I have 4 Tivo's (2 s1's w/ lifetime and 2 s2's w/ lifetime) and I ordered through VIP yesterday. I ordered that it be delivered to HER, b/c one of our s1's got flooded during Katrina and doesn't work anymore, and that s1 is in her name.

So my question is this: when it gets delivered next week, do I need to have HER call to transfer the lifetime subscription to the s3 under her name? Would they give me crap b/c the vip offer we got was to MY email address, and I put it on my credit card, yet she's the one doing the transfer? Could I call and do the whole thing, or are they gonna give me crap b/c the one I'm transferring was under her name?

This fine print might get you: "Both boxes will be activated once this process is complete, but the contract information may take over 60 days to be reflected on the DVR or "Manage My Account"."

Hmm, not sure how that would get me, except that the old, largely non-functional s1 would require a subscription after 12 months (which I would then cancel). As it is, I don't have that Tivo in "My Account." Are you saying they won't let me transfer lifetime if that Tivo isn't already listed under "my account" online? As it is, neither of the s1's (including the one in my name) is listed under "my account" on the Tivo homepage, b/c I can't do remote scheduling or any of the other fancy s2 stuff (and that's the only utility of using online account management for lifetime subscriptions).

Sorry, I was under the impression the S1 wasn't working at all. so long as it can call in you should be good.

EDIT: I guess I was reading that fine print as they MUST be activated and working, that may not be the case

oh, sorry man. Oops. Poor explanation by me. :o

Yeah, it still powers on and calls, but it can't get a signal well, and it frequently has to reboot.

Whodathunkit? Sitting in a humid room surrounded by 3 feet of water for a few weeks isn't good for CE equipment. :D

I'm (now) aware of what the VIP website says. BUT I talked to someone at the phone number you call to do the lifetime transfer. Told him that I'd pre-ordered my S3 from BB which I'd pick up tomorrow and asked him if that'd be a problem when I tried to do the transfer. I pointed out that the details of the transfer hadn't been made public at the time I placed my pre-order. He said no problem.

Has anybody actually tried and failed/succeeded in transferring service from an S2 to a retail-purchased S3?

I placed my order for a S3 box today through the website at the url

I tried to post the string for the URL that points to the VIP page on TiVo's site, but this forum software would not allow it until I've had at least 5 posts. It wouldn't even allow it spelled out in text...

I had gotten that URL since I called TiVo after I found that the URL that they mailed me for "VIP" transfer of Lifetime did not resolve (which could have been a broken link in my mail agent).

But at any rate by going thru the (same URL as above for VIP) URL instead of thru the front-door "Buy TiVo" off the main site, I got the option that states I will call a phone number once I receive my box to transfer my lifetime.

On TiVo's website you can lookup your box's status, FYI. Seeing that mine indeed said lifetime made me feel alittle better.

History: I had orginally transfered lifetime from a very early S1 box that died and I had a second S1 (later gen) that I used instead. The original Phillips box was flakey and I never sent it back to Phillips since TiVo tech support could never isolate the problem. I had a trouble ticket opened for quite a long time. Sometime later (a couple of years) I just went and got a S2 which was out by then and talked TiVo into transfering my S1 lifetime on the original box to my then new S2 box.

So, I had been afraid that they might not (could still be a possibilty, but I'm optimistic) transfer lifetime a "second time" since technically I transfered already once from a S1 to an S2...

I can't wait to get my S3 box. Anybody know who they're using for a carrier? UPS, FedEx? I got a confirm number, but not a comfirm email. But I'm waiting a day or 2 (their fine print says they'll ship within 48 hours) and see if I get an email confirming shipment and then be looking for shipping tracking info in that email..

Cheers,

people ordering through the 10% off at CC have reported fedex picking up shipments yesterday and today from marion, IL. most reports seem to think tivo will use UPS out of a texas warehouse for their orders when they finally start shipping.

Ditto for people ordering through CC without knowing there was a 10% off coupon (d'oh!). Mine shipped today (FedEx standard overnight) also from Marion, IL. Of course, I need my 10' HDMI cable to arrive for it to be look its best, and my cable cards won't be "installed" (aka delivered by Comcast) until Tuesday...

As described here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=4367707#post4367707) though, I plan to nab that 10% anyway.

Hopefully the local CC stores will get some units in stock soon!
