That guy is using the transfer option, so it better get way over $1,000 or he's going to lose money.
Unit = $799
Transfer = $199
Original lifetime = $199-$299
So he's got to sell it for at least $1200 just to break even on the deal.

He's got a reserve price.

And personally I wouldn't care if I "lost" the lifetime money I paid.

He doesn't mean the card was used to activate service, he means the card itself was activated. These cards just hang there, and are like all gift cards...they "have no value until activated at register" or the like.
He means he has proof (via a receipt) that the card was actually paid for, and not just taken from the store.

I wouldn't say he's going to lose money on his original lifetime.
One would assume that he has been using the lifetime service already.
The only way to know if he's losing anything is to know how long he's used his lifetime service.

I'm not sure I get how he is planning to do this.
HOW DO I GET IT?:
Simple. Once I have received payment, I will have my lifetime service transferred to a brand new Series 3 Tivo and ship directly to you. I will also transfer ownership/account into your name as well.This is confusing, since it's not really possible with the VIP offer. It takes 60 days to transfer lifetime service to a Series 3, which he does not mention. If he does the VIP offer and pays the $199 himself, before 60 days have elapsed the Series 3 will be on a 1-year pre-pay, which I don't think can be transferred to the buyer. Even if he could transfer both his old lifetime TiVo and new Series 3 to the buyer, the buyer would still need to cancel service on the old TiVo after 60 days, which isn't mentioned.
It's almost like TiVo made this VIP thing really convoluted to discourage eBay deals like this.

He could be using an outstanding grandfathered Lifetime rather than the temporary VIP lifetime transfer offer.

The zero feedback alone has set off all 5 alarms in my head simultaneously. :D
