View Full Version : Did I just shoot myself in the foot re: the $199 transfer?
So as soon as I saw the S3 on the TiVo.com site, I went ahead and ordered it (knowing that the VIP thing was happening)...
Then I read the following today:
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/tivo-series-3-lifetime-subscription-transfer-go-live-200230.php
"SuppleMonkey says:
If you ARE interested in doing the service transfer, it's important to note that you MUST order from the VIP site listed above. Do not order from TiVo's homepage.
TiVo's homepage takes you to an order screen where you must choose a subscription service option. And if you order service, the VIP hotline will be unable to transfer your lifetime service to the new DVR.
Just a warning from someone who jumped the gun."
So the question is, did I just royally mess up to the tune of $900+? From the comments on Gizmodo, it seems like I am stuck which would be really tragic. (insert whiney comment here about how life is unfair, and how I am not being treated like a VIP)

I imagine that if you bought through TiVo there will be a way to do it. Simple confusion regarding ordering through the TiVo.com product list web page versus the Tivo.com/vip page should be a minor administrative correction that can be settled over the next 60 days. If TiVo screws you over this, I'd be suprised.
If you bought through retail, I'm afraid you are out of luck.

Yeah I definitely bought it through TiVo.com. Just not through tivo.com/vip.
I hope you're right about the transfers. It would taint my otherwise extreme enthusiasm with the box likely arriving Friday and TWC arriving on Tuesday to install the cards.

I would make a call to TiVo and see if they can correct the order right away.

You mentioned TWC was installing cards. I called TWC and they were adamant about not installing cards in the TIVO. I was also told that if I was to order the CableCard for my TV, they would increase the cost on my cable fees as well as my RoadRunner fees. They told me CableCards are unbundled and as such I would pay more for cable fee, internet fees and my premium channels would cost more!
All this has scared me into not getting a Series 3 for the time being. What are you hearing from TWC?

Even so, you should be able to return it via the 30 day guarantee and just order again.
I don't know if there are any fees associated with the return, however.

TWC Cincy is installing mine Saturday... and I got a nice call from a manager after I sent in a worried note weeks ago when I heard the 'TWC won't support TiVo S3' rumor assuring me this would be fine.

I ordered my unit yesterday, but I can't remember if I did it through the VIP page.
Just checked the site and it seems that it forces you to pick a plan if you don't go through the VIP page. Since I didn't pick a plan when I ordered that means I went through the right page right?

Drake,
I called TWC (Redondo Beach, CA) yesterday and had no problem. They're coming next friday when I have a day off to wait for the cable dude.

This is the type of situation we'd like to get details about. If you wouldn't mind, please go to the TiVo CableCARD Feedback form (http://www.tivo.com/series3hdDvr_cc.asp) and let us know about this experience. The information filed there will be reviewed and likely followed up on. If you have contact information for your provider, please include it.
This feedback form does not collect your personal information and is not intended to provide technical support. It is for data collection in the hopes of improving future experiences for CableCARD customers. Hopefully we can put your feedback to good use.

Just called them. They said there is only ONE way to do this... you must order via the VIP link. The gentleman I spoke with canceled my order for me and I reordered.
He said since they're not shipping yet, there's no issue canceling it now.
Even so, you should be able to return it via the 30 day guarantee and just order again.

You pay for return shipping and presumably don't get refunded the original shipping charges. No restocking fee though.
