View Full Version : Will Series3 work with HDMI switching receivers?

Many cable boxes don't. If you try to connect their HDMI outputs to a receiver, they won't work - these cable boxes (the Motorola 6412 is one of these) have a faulty HDCP implementation, which prevents the cable boxes from being connected to a receiver via HDMI - if you use HDMI with these boxes, you have to connect it directly to the TV.
Will the Series3 overcome this limitation?

This isn't a HDCP limitation.
In my case here, I have my STB hooked up via HDMI to up my external scaler. The scaler's HDMI out is hooked up to my plasma via HDCP-Compliant DVI (HDMI to DVI converter cable to change connector type).
HDMI devices can be daisy chained with as many "nodes" in the middle as you want. For example, you should be able to take a HDMI STB, hook it into a HDMI distribution unit, into a HDMI scaler, into a HDMI TV. As long as every device is HDCP compliant, you *should* be good to go.
It sounds like the reason you're having problems is because something in your chain has a bad HDMI or HDCP implementation.
Since your STB works when connected directly to the TV, it almost makes me thing there's something wrong with your receiver... however troubleshooting HDMI issues is generally a nightmare... so good luck with that! ;)

Trust me on this: it's the cable box's fault. Others have reported this problem.

Well, if that's the case, we'll just have to hope HDMI is implemented properly on the S3 :)

The SA 8300HD DVR had this issue with my Yamaha RX-V2600 which has HDMI. As I recall the explaination I got when I tried this late last year, the 8300HD doesn't understand that the Yamaha is a repeater and so it complained about it. I don't remember the exact error. It wasn't too big a deal since my Sony SXRD HDTV has 2 HDMI inputs anyway.

I have a SA8300HD with TWC and it's working fine with my external scaler. I won't pretend to know what's happenning between the two devices but it's working ok on my end :)

My Comcast DCT 3412 doesn't work on HDMI through the receiver. I'm hoping to run the S3 through my P84 on an HDMI input. Anyone have any experience on this combo? Thanks

SA 8300HD with a Denon 2807 and it won't work with HDMI. Good thing it converts component to HDMI so I have one cable to the TV.

I guess I should have looked for a receiver that had 5 or 6 component inputs instead of banking on HDMI. :-)
I'm still looking forward to the S3. Been a long time TiVo fan (my four year old can't watch TV w/o saying "daddy, go back"), and I was very disappointed with the Comcast DVR.

I'll have the 5x1 monoprice switch later today and plan on using it with my tivo. I'll report if I have any problems.

My S3 is hooked up to an Anthem D2 via HDMI and I am having no issues. And, many third party HDMI devices have had handshaking issues with the D2.

I can tell you that the S3 works perfectly with an HDMI switch. I got mine from Monoprice a few months ago. The only device I've had a problem with is a cheap Zenith DVD player. But I couldn't get it to sync with the TV direct, either, so it's a POS. The Comcast 3412 works just fine through the switch as well. The underlying problem with the receivers is not the cable boxes. It's the HDCP implementation on the receiver. Having said that, I don't have a HDMI receiver.

That's good to know. I was looking at that receiver to upgrade my VSX-47TX. No firewire, no HDMI ports on my existing receiver. Nothing wrong with it, but the 84TXsi looks sweet.

I'm about to buy an HDMI switcher from monoprice.com myself to use with Tivo S3, Todhiba HD-A1 DVD and Cablevision SA8300 into Panny plasma TH-50PX50U.
Which switcher are you using:
Product ID: 2777
5X1 Enhanced HDMI Switch with built-in Equalizer (REV.2.0)
Product ID: 2778
2X1 Enhanced HDMI Switch with built-in Equalizer
Product ID: 2787
5X4 HDMI Switcher Splitter w/ built-in Equalizer

I purchaed from Monoprice the 2x1 HDMI switch and it works very well. I don't think I have the equalizer one though.
I have a Fujitsu 42" sharing an HDMI connection with the S3 and an HD-DVD player. Very nice switch and it came the following day. :)

75 ft of monoprice cabling, works when connected to projector but not through the 2700.
Can anyone else confirm/deny with this model?
The 75 foot cable may be the problem. Unless your connections are well-nigh perfect, and the cable too ... and your Yamaha receiver acts as a receiver, you will continue to have issues. Try connecting a repeater in the path, perhaps?
And for testing purposes try using a shorter cable from the S3 to the receiver and on to your display device (projector) if it can be moved.
To help people provide some diagnosis/input, feel free to describe the connectivity/topology in much greater details. Which cables, from where, how long etc. And what works/doesn't.

Audio and Video working perfectly through HDMI on my Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSi. Whewwww!
Hum...When I hooked up my new vsx-84txsi tonight I no longer get any output from the Tivo via HDMI. Everything else works fine through the HDMI output on the receiver. If I reboot the Tivo i can get it to display on the screen, but, the picture is all snowy and garbled while going through the receiver. If I hook the Tivo back up directly to the TV everything is fine.
I tried powering off the Tivo, removing and replacing the cable, etc. to no avail.
(My TV is a Mitsu WS-55315 that actually has a DVI port rather than a HDMI port so I run it though a DVI to HDMI cable, the DVI port is fully HDCP compliant.)

Series 3 HDMI -> Sony DA5200ES -> Sony KDL40XBR3 works great. Actually, running it through the receiver eliminated the TVs tendency to switch resolutions since the receiver is upscaling all the video to 1080p now.

I have seen some people report problems when using HDMI to DVI with the Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSi and some displays. The unit seems to work very well when all connections are HDMI, but I read about some problems when the display uses DVI.

Thanks! Funny, I've been reading through that exact thread already :)... Great minds must think alike.
I have noticed (not Tivo related) that the vsx-84txsi that I have (just got it today) seems to have a line (randomly located on the screen) that is shifted a little bit to the right of the rest of the displayed info (really noticeable on the Tivo menus) when I am using the DCDi scaler to upscale (even if the source doesn't need to be scaled, such as the tivo set to 1080i). Not sure if it is my txsi or if it is a universal problem - either way I guess that I can't win. I'll be buying a new TV in the next couple of months anyway once I get my hands on the much coveted PS3, so perhaps many of my difficulties will vanish then.

I have an 8300HD and S3 through my Denon 3806 via HDMI switching. The S3 works great, the 8300HD seems to play a game while trying to sync up. One time yesterday it took about 30 sec (usually takes about 10-15 sec). My wife walked in and asked if the cable was out. I may go back to using the 8300HD via component and let the receiver digitize it. I have an ED plasma , not an HD plasma, so its not a big deal.

Simple setup, 1m cable Tivo to 2700, 2m cable 2700 to Westinghouse LVM-47w1. Only problem I've noticed is that it seems to, after a reset, come up flickering, screen comes on and goes off. It's on enough that I can get through the menus and select an output mode from the Tivo. I've had success selecting various output modes. I could probably go through them and verify which work and which don't if that would help. PM me if you want.

what size hdmi cable are you using?
my switcher from monoprice doesn't work with my s3 hd tivo. monoprice says it is because i am not using the thick hdmi cables that they sell (22 awg)
are you using standard cables?
thanks
I'm using a random set of cheap & dirt-cheap (including monoprice's 24 or 26 awg) HDMI cables, and my S3 works great with my monoprice switch. Your switch my be bad. Try switching cables first, but be prepared to RMA the switch.

My Motorola 6200 works fine with my Denon 3808, monorpice HDMI switch, and my Algolith Flea. I did have some problems when I was using a connectgear switch with the 6200. Although I've never had any problems with my TiVos and HDMI switches or receivers going back to 2004 with my HDTiVo from DirecTV.

I have a TiVo S3 and TiVo HD connected to a Marantz SR8001 receiver. The receiver HDMI output is connected to the TV. Everything works fine. However, I did find that the HDMI cables supplied with the TiVos had connectors that easily come loose from the receiver HDMI inputs. I replaced the cables with ones with better connectors.
