OK, I can't purchase from the Tivo store. Not totally unexpected.
But in reading Megazone's review, he says the software is version 8.0.1a, which is similar in functionality to the 7.2 software.
Last fall series 2 were functional in Canada for the first time. I forget what software version made that happen but I have no idea if the 8.0.1a software allows users to input a postal code instead of a zip code for activation in Canada.
Does anyone know yet if the S3 software allows activation in Canada?

Great question! I'm going to guess that's a big no since we do not have cablecard. Maybe it works with analog cable, but then you don't get half the channels. Someone please shed some light on this one!

That is a very good question! I believe the ability to enter a Canidia zip code came with version 7.2.1, so it could be no. The only way to know for sure however is to either call/email TiVo and ask or have one of the reviewers rerung GS on their box and see if Canada is an option or not.

TeeVee. I know I won't be able to use the cablecard functionality in Canada. That's a given. I want to record OTA HD which is reasonably prevelant in Toronto and and analogue cable from my Rogers cable account. I'll still keep using their crappy HD PVR for anything I can't manage to get off the air with the S3.
Dan, I don't believe that the S2's that work in Canada took a postal code directly. It seems to me we had to input 00000 for the zip code or something like that and then there were submenus that came up that dealt with the Candian context. So, I doubt there will be an "Are you in Canada or the U.S." question during setup.
I'm not too hopeful about calling customer service .... they tend to know FAR less than the folks here and often get the questions I'd ask them wrong.
Any S3 reviewers out there know the answer? I would be enormously surprised if the S3 wouldn't activate in Canada but I don't want to plunk down $800 plus exchange rate , plus shipping and duties and Candian taxes to find out I've got a box I can't use.

Actually there is a message on the bottom of the Zip Code screen, something like 'Press Enter for Canadian Postal Codes' or something like that... let me check my photos... Yep, there it is: http://www.tivolovers.com.nyud.net:8080/Photos/Series3-Review/Medium/Second-Setup-2.jpg
