I'm disappointed that there's no TiVo To Go functionality in the Series 3 with regards to transferring shows to a PC or portable device. While this may not be a show stopper, it is unfortunate that the TiVo is giving in to the MPAA/RIAA facists.

Yeah, I was really wanting it to be able to transfer to other tivo's and stuff. If this is not going to be in the future functionality, I wonder how long we will have to wait to find out? :(

Is "Tivo To Go" coming later or not at all? Also I don't see the user manual on the site yet. I was hoping to read it for all the details.

Ok I've been reading more about "Tivo To Go" Regarding the Series 3 and it looks like Tivo decided to screw us. Some are saying the Series 3 will never have it. I'm really curious how many other restrictions this box will have.

This has been covered over and over in just the past few hours.

I understand about not using HMO to transfer a show from the new S3... BUT why can't you send a show from a S2 box to the S3 unt?

The S3 will have the digital format and some other things going on. We know TiVo has historically put out x.x.2 releases that really have things put together and I suspect that since S3 does not have MRV yet that it will take 7.3.2 on the S2 before we see MRV starting to happen so that S3 differences can be accounted for. Since 7.3.2 is needed for other reasons as well I would guess 7.3.2 will be out for S2 before the end of the year with a correlating release for the S3 as well.

So I highly doubt TiVo is trying screw us, its customers  , but is working to bring the S3 and S2 up to speed together.

TTG is another issue but for the SD type content we can already pull off the S2 I would think it will be there for the S3 in a future upgrade as well.

This initial release I think is to get it out the door for all the HD usrs dying for a TiVo interface, may all your early adopter dreams come true.

Why such a quiet release? Especially since Apple is going to steal their thunder... (and yes I realize the theories there is a partnership, but I'll believe it when I see it).

If there is no partnership with Apple, this is the dumbest release date ever.

Hmm... All the options on the TiVo website appear to include service plans in the cost. What about people who plan on taking advantage of the lifetime transfer from an older box, or more importantly (for me) the grandfathering of a lifetime prior to January 2000?

If you have a grandfathered S1, buy the S3 anywhere you want and call Tivo to transfer the lifetime.

If you want to do any other lifetime transfer, you have to buy the S3 from the tivo.com/vip site and call the special phone number when the box arrives.

I imagine TiVo had this release date set long before Apple made their little shindig public (which was only two weeks ago).

You can almost hear the crickets chirping on tivo.com. Who is going to buy this thing for 800 bucks when you have to give up on demand and deal with the other hassles of the CableCARD. Bye, Tivo. Nice to meet you- I hope you got some other tricks up your sleeve for the 99% of consumers who don't have any idea what in the world Cable CARD is and don't want to give up on demand.

where do you see that? it looks like you can pre-buy 1, 2 or three years plus the $800 for the S3

Wonder if it's worth my mustering together 800 bucks before the end of the year to lay my stopple-plagued S1 with lifetime service to rest...or if I'd be better off letting the S1 die an elderly old death and building a Mythbox in its stead.

Well, now that it is officially available, I can now officially put to rest my idea of upgrading to a S3 now, even though I don't yet have an HDTV or HD service. $799 is too much for my blood at this point.

I will wait and see how much the price comes down over the next several months and what may transpire with Comcast.

I'm happy it's here, but I can't fork the dough for now.

Like most here have said the price tag and the lack of features on opening day is probably going to dissaude me from getting a Series 3 in the near future, but all the posts have got me thinking about tivos target audience and what they want to accomplish.
First how many people have HDTVs ? I wonder what percentage of Americans have them; then what percentage of those use any type of DVR for that tv.

Secondly is Tivo putting its money making future in the Series 3? Lets keep in mind that they just came out with the DT Series 2 and for (what I believe) most Americans that would be enough because of their lack of HD. I just wonder what Tivo plans to capitalize off of, Series 3 subs or Series 2 subs.

The price IS going to drop its inevitable. This price is obviuusly for those early adopters who want the newest toys on the block. As for me too rich for my blood but I do forsee one in my future.

As for the message board I hope it wont be filled with how Tivo is screwing us over because guess what??? you dont have to buy it. Also I hope every page isnt filled with how its lacking features. Like someone said you wanted it out quickly and you got it. I guess my bottom line is I love Tivo and i think that its a great product. yes they have made some weird decisions in th past and they will in the future but for the most part they were right when they said I would never watch TV the same again.

Long Live TIVO

Well, the Series 3 can work with even Standard Def TVs like most HD tuners can, right?

Whether you're talking digital cable or OTA, the Series 3 would still be of use to people without HDTVs.

true but why get it if you dont have an hdtv?

as far as target audience goes heres what TiVo marketing executive Jim Denney said

"We think that there is a category of customers that have been waiting for it, and want it," he said. "We know that $800 is not an insignificant amount of money. But we put a lot in it. We think that it targets a specific audience."

Would you have a big anouncemnet if you were over a year late to the party wearing a $800 suit and everyone else was renting their suits for 10 bucks?

Heh.

I've been using both DirecTiVo (for SD) and Time Warner (for HD) for a year now. It's been expensive and annoying, but I wanted an HD DVR, and I couldn't give up TiVo for the stuff I could get through it. I vowed that as soon as I could get a one-box solution, either DirecTV or T-W (actually, now Comcast, but they don't seem to realize it yet) would bite the dust. Looks like it's bye-bye DirecTV; I ordered my Series 3 from TiVo today.

One thing I've learned over the past year is that the T-W box (SA 8300HD) isn't even the same game as a TiVo, let alone the same league, let alone the same ballpark.

By the way, any word on when these start shipping?

Exactly. If I order one off tivo.com today, am I better off than by rolling the dice with Best Buy?

The Comcast "technician" is scheduled to "install" the CableCards on the 26th.
