Afternoon, tired of lurking.
With the upcoming chance of 6.3 being made available, I decided today to pull the trigger on a third HR10-250.
But no dice. None are available in any regional area of Arizona I am in (Scottsdale). Either CC or BB. My wife is going to stop in one on her way home from work today just to make sure, but I may be trying to order one online later today. Methinks marketing has stopped, or there has been a run on them.
Anyone having the same issue?

bartz,
DirecTV stopped production on the HR10-250 last year. This year, they've halted product on the standard DirecTivos.
DirecTV is phasing out all Tivos for new DVRs with their own software developed in-house. They want complete control over the interface. They also want to retake the 20% of DVR revenue ($1 of your $5 DVR fee) currently being paid to Tivo. That $1/mo may not seem like much for the TIvo software, but DirecTV sees a time in the near future when almost every customer will have or want a DVR, and 20+ million customers * 12 months * $1/mo = around $250 million a year.
DirecTV installers are being told they can no longer obtain HR10 units. DirecTV is also using a variety of methods to push installers toward the R15 over DirecTivo. DirecTV has issued promotional materials that push its R15 and HR20 and make no mention of Tivo. DirecTV has issued memos to major retailers instructing them to remove DirecTivo products on display and replace them with its own R15/H20 DVRs. Best Buy has already done so at many of its retail stores on the west coast, and you can expect others like Circuit City to follow once BB's HR20 exclusive runs out.
Soon, the only way to get Tivo will be to go to cable or off-air broadcasts. Comcast and Cox both announced deals to offer Tivo software on their DVRs. Tivo is expected to ship the Series3 HDTV DVR for digital cable and off-air next week.

A couple days ago I was told by a D* Retention CSR that the HR20's are available at BB only until Sept 11th so who knows what's going on with the HR10-250's. None of it makes sense.
The reason I called D* was to find out when my new HR20 would be shipped to replace my HR10-250. They told me "around the end of the year for the Chicago area". I asked the CSR why I have to wait till the end of the year when all the stores already have them. He said "Because LA is a test area", What the frick does that mean?
Does anyone know why the HR20's are only available till the 11th? What happens after the 11th?

You misunderstood. They will be available after the 11th. Best Buy's exclusive runs until that date. After that, other retailers and dealers will start getting them.

Best Buy worked out an exclusive first release deal with DirecTV (to be the exclusive retail distributor of the HR20), till the 11th.
After that, you will be able to get the HR20 from any authorized DirecTV dealer.
As for the HR10-250... as said earlier, production of the HR10-250 stop well over a year ago.
And everything that has been sold, is stock on hand or refurbed units.
So basically it's availablility is not guaranteed...

If an HR10-250 dies in a non test area, what model would D* replace it with?

I was just at my local best buy and they had both the HR20 and the HR10 in stock. Both were 399.99.

Perhaps this will come full circle with people willing to over pay for the HR10 again once they hear the stories about the HR20. I got two HR10's shortly after the release and sold one for 1400.
I know it won't get to that level, but I would bet that people will be willing to pay some more for the HR10 in the coming months....

Considering there are no test areas any more for the HR20 (it is available nationwide via BestBuy, and starting the 13th by all authorized dealers)
If your HR10 dies, and is covered by DirecTV's protection plan, or the 1yr warranty. Then there should still be some HR10's available.
But as the weeks/months move on... they are going to become very sparse (as replacements)

This will probably describe DirecTV's customer base, as well. :p

Do any of this site's advertisers still have HR10-250s available? I'm supposed to be getting one installed this weekend but am very afraid they'll be bringing an HR20. But that will do me no good since our HD locals are not offered yet through D* and with the HR20s OTA tuners being deactivated I'd have no way of recording my locals.

Unfortunately that won't do me much good here in Buffalo. And we don't have Costco. I called all our BB and CC and none have them. Any online retailers?

The Costco near me (Corona Ca.) has many HR10-250's still in stock. $349 if I recall. I bought all 3 that I have from them. They are always about $50 cheaper than anywhere else. I paid a bit for mine $449 if memory serves (with one $100 rebate). Get em while they last.

My local BB (Huntington, WV) was told to remove all of them from the floor and ship them back. They did. Of course, they don't have the HR20 yet, so no HD DVR if a customer wanted one.
The CC across the mall had several in stock.

I'd be happy to pick up HR10-250's from my local Costco and ship them... for a nominal fee. :D
