August 15th: I call DirecTV, and on the second attempt snag an HR10-250. My only cost is picking up 8 months of the HD package after 4 months free. Install scheduled for September 2nd.

September 2nd: Installer calls for directions. I have him check the truck, and he's got an HR20. Call DTV - they are surprised to hear this, as the HR20 'is not available in my area' (Twin Cities). They reschedule for today, September 9th, and make a specific note in the work order that I need an HR10-250. I now have free Showtime for 3 months, and a $5 credit for 6 months as a consolation prize.

September 9th: You guessed it - installer shows up with an HR20. I show him on his own work order where it says HR10-250. He goes away again.

After yet another phone call with installation services, I am now rescheduled for September 28th. Once again, they tell me that I should have got an HR10, because that's what it says on the work order, and 'the HR20 is not rolled out there yet'. I guess I must be seeing things......

At this rate, everyone will have 6.3 before I get my HR10 - at least I won't have to wait long for the update.

And you chose to wait to order the HR10-250 on the same month that D* debuted their HD-DVR because ______?

I would think that the thread here about D* giving out the HR10-250 for free started back in early June would have told you the clock was ticking.

Quite simple. I hadn't really been paying attention, and when one of my DVR40s died, I thought I'd give it a try.

Ask them to ship you the unit directly. I don't know if they do that any more, but my 1st HD receiver (A Samsung) was sent to me from D* pending my install.

If they do that, you won't need to rely on the installers.

I was in a similar situation. I called retention and they agreed to install an HR10, upgrade me to a 5 LNB dish (yea, I know I only need 3 but that's what they do now) and relocate my existing HDVR2 to the master bedroom - including pulling a second line. The day before the install, the local installer called to say the distribution center is out of HD DVRs and I needed to reschedule. I said "fine, so long as I get an HR10" After calling distributor and DTV, the installer told me they weren't getting any more HR10 units. All he could offer me was an HR20.

I called DTV's retention line again and specifically asked if they could direct ship me an HR10 from another distribution center. After checking, the CSR said no, that wasn't possible. Ultimately they let me go buy a unit from BestBuy and reimbursed me the full purchase price as a credit to my account.

Since it will be over a month for the delayed install, they should at least extend your free subscription.

A friend of mine just an hour ago tried to get an HR10. He was also told they were out, but if he bought one they would credit is account the cost.
