TiVoWeb over PPP

I'm looking to use TiVoWeb over PPP on my S1 TiVo. I have the cable with the headphone jack on one end and a phone jack on the other. Everywhere I read it says make a null modem cable. Why can't I just plug this into my Modem on my laptop?
The reason I want to use TiVo web is because I want to change the name of the shows I record. If there is a easier way to do this could some one let me know.

Calling a "null modem" is a bit of a misnomer really. All it is is a cable that allows two computers to communicate directly over the serial port.

Look in the normal serial PPP howtos to get that working, then look for how to enable always on serial PPP.
