I bought an HR10-250 when they first came out and I'm getting a new one next week. I plan on applying all the goodies I can.
What are the differences betwen the two?
1. Hopefully the HDMI will work.
2. Are the motherboards different? In other words, why can't software v 3.xx be upgraded to 6.xx?
3. Do the USB ports and networking work out of the box?
4. Is a hard drive bracket needed to add a second drive?
5. What is the file format of the new units?
6. Can tivotogo be used on the new?

I think the only difference is with the HDMI output.
Instead of trying to answer the rest of your qyestions, I suggest that you do some browsing here and maybe a few searches.
For example, there's a thread concerning the upgrade to 6.3 which should start happening next week for all HR10s.

All HR10-250 are the same and run the same software. The HDMI daughter card has had a revision to fix the problem with it.

1. Yes, it will.
2. Yes. Because it can't. Search if you need a better answer.
3. No.
4. Yes.
5. Same as every other Tivo.
6. No.

I'm hoping for a down and dirty quick answer. I've spent hours and hours for weeks reading this and other forums learning a lot. If you look close you can see information leaking out of my head.
A short answer will undoubtedly lead me to much more reading. In all candor, if someone asked me questions that I could answer in a short note back, I'd do it instead of directing them to hours of more reading. I feel spunky so here goes,
How do I turn on that light?
First you need to locate the ore to make the tools to make the metal and glass parts, then you need to learn how to blow glass.

mr. unnatural, my question about the software comes because while searching for programs to use I noticed that some were for file formats other than .ty on my HR10-250.
It's like going through a ring of fire! You can search and read for hours and hours just to find one answer. Sometimes a forum member will say "it works like this" instead of "No, search if you want more."
I like those!
I'm feeling frisky tonight and lettin' off steam, so I don't care if this flys in the face!

Fly all you want, but there is the "more flies with honey" factor to consider. Smart-alecs seem to give a lot of answers, but no one seems to get many answers with a smart-alec approach. If you really want a serious reply, there are other types of approaches that might motivate folks to give you a better answer. And that doesn't mean I'm passing judgment, as that would then be the exact definition of pot-kettle-black hypocrisy :o .

A sense of humor is very useful in these dificult times. Just lettin' off steam. I expected one or two who didn't know me and would respond like that.
I've been posting serious questions and answers for awhile.
Happy Friday!!

I got a HR 10-250 not long after they first came out, and my HDMI was dead on arrival. I got a new one last week, as I decided to get a new Samsung 40' LCD for my office. First of all the HDMI works in the new one, and the interface is faster. Doing things like setting up season passes and programming recordings is almost twice as fast as with my other unit. Not sure why it's faster, but I just know it is.

As you setup more season passes, record more items, enter thumbs ratings, ... it will slow down to the speed of the other unit.

How can everybody be positive this upgrade will have the same effect of speed on the HR10-250 that it had on sa tivo's and sd tivo's?
Some people say they are different in many ways.

The hardware may have slightly changed (e.g. HDMI card), but I think everyone here will agree that the current software 3.1.5f is the downfall of this unit. As rminsk stated, it will seem faster until you are using it for a while and the database begins to grow. Hopefully the 6.3 update will resolve these issues with slowness. The biggest complaint everyone has (myself included) is the guide and SP being slow. Also, the lack of folders is a pain. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks though...that will be a thing of the past.

I wouldn't say that 3.1.5f is the downfall of the HDTivo. The OS for this model has always been slow, regardless of the version. Granted, setting up a season pass can be painfully slow but how often do you need to do it? Most of us have simply accepted the nature of the beast and learned to live with its shortcomings. You just have to take the good (outstanding PQ and it's a Tivo!) with the bad (sloooooow menus).
Let's face it, the HR10-250 is still the best HD DVR on the face of the planet, at least for DTV recording. The HR20-700 is showing promise but it's still got some bugs to work out (and no ATSC tuners enabled yet). We lived without folders for years before it was implemented on the SA units and somehow managed to survive. It all has to do with priorities. Mine is being able to record and play back my favorite shows in HD. Anything else is icing on the cake.

The slow menus are beginning to be a real pain. Last night after getting home from the local high school football game a couple of the players and their parents came over to watch the replays on the local news. I decided to show off my Tivo by recording a channel and watching another. We ended up missing part of one channels coverage due to the Tivo sitting there with the "Please Wait" screen after hitting record. It sat there for over 4 minutes. I thought my beloved Tivo was hitting the proverbial wall. Then this morning while setting up a couple college games to record it set them up rather quickly. Just a little frustrating.
